Basic Functions and Responsibility

As a member of the Site S&E team, work collaboratively to ensure that compliant environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs are developed and implemented within operating departments at the Rahway site. Integrates EHS programs into daily operations to assure regulatory compliance, achieves continuous performance improvement, meeting EHS performance objectives. Partners with key stakeholders in research (labs and pilot plants), office, and facility support to develop priorities to achieve these goals in alignment with site business priorities. Performs responsibilities and addresses challenges. Performs responsibilities and addresses problems with limited supervision.

Primary Activities

With a deep knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations and their applicability, supports R&D customer business areas via the following:

  • Manages and implements overall industrial hygiene program for laboratories, pilot plants, clinical manufacturing, office environments, and facility-related support.

  • Supports biosafety program implementation for laboratories, pilot plants, clinical manufacturing, office environments, and facility-related support.

  • Anticipates, recognizes, and evaluates workplace health hazards (chemicals, including potent compounds, biological materials, noise, ergonomics, IAQ) and recommends proper control strategies to manage identified risks.

  • Completes industrial hygiene and biosafety hazard/risk assessments, ergonomic evaluations, process hazard analysis, and incident investigations.

  • Review business area processes, procedures, and management of change documents to ensure conformance to recognized EHS regulations, standards, and guidelines.

  • Support client groups in completing injury/illness analysis, training, self-assessments, and addressing specific EHS concerns as they are raised.

  • Develop EHS procedures and training programs.

  • Monitors key safety performance indicators and visibly promotes EHS policies and initiatives.

  • Consults with and advises department personnel to provide sound and timely technical and administrative assistance supporting projects and long-range plans that assure conformance with safety, health & environmental requirements.

Position Qualifications:

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, concentration in Safety or Environmental related technical discipline preferred.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 5+ years of professional work experience with a preference for that time in environmental, health, and safety.

  • Advanced proficiency in industrial hygiene, occupational safety, critical thinking, and communication skills. Basic level of skill in project management and problem-solving.

  • Evidence of leadership, effective communication, and organizational skills required.

  • Demonstrated performance in a highly regulated industry with strict standards adherence and compliance initiatives.

  • Self-motivated, proactive, can-do attitude.

  • Ability to handle potentially stressful situations with a positive attitude.


Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • EHS experience in the pharmaceutical, bio-pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or related industry preferred.

  • Relevant professional certification(s) preferred, including P.E., ASP, CSP, and/or CIH.

  • Strong systems and IT knowledge are a plus.

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

Effective September 5, 2023, employees in office-based positions in the U.S. will be working a Hybrid work consisting of three total days on-site per week, generally Tuesday, Wednesday and either Monday or Thursday, although the specific days may vary by site or organization, with Friday designated as a remote-working day, unless business critical tasks require an on-site presence. Expected salary range:

$91,600.00 - $144,100.00
