We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.
Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.
This position is a full-time role located in the Richland, Washington project office, and works a 9/80 schedule, offering every other Friday off.
Position Summary
This role at the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) High Level Waste (HLW) is required to address significant technical and legacy challenges. The WTP High Level Waste Facility has been reinvigorated with direction from DOE to complete the 90% design of all facilities by 2027. The scope of this role is broad and includes the management of staff, technical issues and cost/ schedule. This role will interface directly with DOE Managers and Washington State Regulators as needed. The role will be multidisciplinary including interfaces with Engineering, Environmental, QA, construction, and Procurement as needed.
Responsibilities
- Manage a technical scope of work for the interface with Tank Farms and technology research using inhouse resource and SMEs from multiple departments.
- Manage cost and schedule scope in excess of $200m.
- Support the Environment Function on technical issues with the Washington State Regulator.
- Manage the ongoing Technical Development program with the Melter and enhanced waste glass formulations.
Qualifications and Skills
Basic Qualifications
- A recognized BS or higher degree in engineering or scientific discipline from an accredited college or university and 15+ years of relevant experience working on EPC projects, or a minimum of 21 years of progressively relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)
- Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.
Minimum Qualifications
- Extensive progressive work experience, including supervision, preferably in project and design engineering or construction or other relevant areas such as systems startup, field engineering.
- Extensive understanding and experience working in a DOE regulated nuclear environment.
- Experience working in an NQA-1 regulated environment.
- At least fifteen years of prior experience designing or operating major nuclear facilities.
- Proficient knowledge of Project Engineering processes and procedures.
- Working knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.
- Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive current knowledge of Washington State Permitting requirements.
- Deep understanding of WTP/Tank Farms technical issues and operating methods.
- Very strong client relationships with DOE.
- Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards.
- Proficient in negotiation when dealing with client representatives.
- Strong knowledge of quality requirements, engineering methods, computer software controls and configuration management in a nuclear environment.
- Ability to assess Owner processes and help identify improvements and corrective actions.
- Ability to manage others in the resolution of complex technical problems and the ability to articulate results.
