Job Description
The Senior Planner will be responding to public inquiries and land use complaints; preparation of detailed staff reports and oral presentations to the planning commission; interpretation, enforcement, and updating of the Zoning Ordinance.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Responds to the public about land use and zoning matters.
- Researches and writes staff reports for the Planning Commission and City Council or other commissions, as needed.
- Assists in the interpretation, enforcement, and updating of city codes, including the zoning code.
- Assists in administering the procedures for all permits required by the Zoning Ordinance.
- Provide project management for land use applications and assists applicants with city land development procedures and questions.
- Prepares graphics, maps and photographs for presentations and reports.
- Coordinates public information and updates for land use applications. This includes coordination of internal development review committee.
- Performs pre-site inspections to ensure compliance with code requirements.
- Performs planning and zoning studies.
- Reviews building permits for code compliance.
- Maintains and updates the zoning and guide plan maps.
- Responsible for grading permits.
- Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A belief in and commitment to the organization's shared values.
- A bachelor's degree in planning or related field and at least 5 years of responsible relevant experience.
- A basic knowledge of all phases of planning, including comprehensive plans, zoning and subdivision ordinances.
- The ability to communicate ideas, explanations, and recommendations clearly both orally and in writing.
- The ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
Desirable Qualifications:
- A master's degree in planning or related field
- Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)
- Experience in a metropolitan planning office.
