Job Summary
The Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage is looking for their next Legislative and Policy Director! This position provides agency-wide leadership, management, and stewardship of the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage legislative priorities. This position will have the opportunity to provide ongoing advice and information to the Governor's Office, Legislature, and other government agencies in matters of importance to the African heritage community. The projects include research and community engagement to develop data driven and human centered designed legislative agenda that will address the current and future needs of Minnesota. This position coordinates official statements to legislators and legislative staff and ensures effective relationships are established and maintained with the legislature so that agency goals and mission can be met. This position additionally coordinates joint legislative positions and actions with other agencies and is a point of contact for the Governor's respective policy team. This position will be responsible for program development, training on the legislative process, and supervision of interns and Policy fellows.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years' experience working with the African heritage community and/or government, and/or public relations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience in community outreach, including work with families, campaigns, grassroots organizing, community development, youth programs, arts and culture, social services, or similar field.

A bachelor's degree in business, public administration, African American Studies, political science, or a related fieldmay substitute forone year of experience. An associate degree may substitute for six months of experience.
Minimum qualifications to be assessed at the interview:
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, creative thinking and tactful problem solving.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence, experience working with diverse groups within the African heritage community.
  • Understanding and familiarity with issues of importance to the African heritage community of Minnesota.
  • Ability to multi-task and possess strong organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge in wide range of various social issues, including but not limited to public safety, education, immigration, health, economic development, human rights, housing, child welfare etc.
  • Knowledge and experience in data analysis and research methods
  • Knowledge and experience of the Minnesota Legislative and Policy making process.
  • Flexibility in navigating various topic areas.
  • Ability to effectively design, develop and manage policy projects.
  • Proficiency in management and administration of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, etc.
  • Familiarity with website design tools, such as Word Press or similar software.
