Description
The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks, and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince George's counties. In Prince George's County, we are also responsible for developing the County's public recreation programs.
The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising, and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George's County. The Northern Region Parks Division (NRPD) is one of three maintenance Divisions within this Department and is composed of eight major work programs: Fleet Management/Trades, Building Maintenance, Area Maintenance, Playgrounds, Trails, Athletic Field/Turf Management, Trash/Recycling/Waste Management, Program Support, and the administrative section. The mission of NRPD is to provide professional, high-quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince George's County and its customers.
The Senior Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker position is at the Polk Street Maintenance Facility in Hyattsville, Maryland. This role encompasses various responsibilities within park maintenance, ranging from trash management to landscape care and playground upkeep to facility maintenance.

Examples of Important Duties
  • Provide daily routine custodial care to offices, community centers, park rental buildings, and comfort stations with quality customer service in mind.
  • Occasionally performs routine custodial maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures.
  • Maintain athletic fields according to established standards. Lays outfield (for example, measures, plots and squares corners, plot yard lines, and mark lines). Installs amenities associated with athletic fields. Aerates turf areas.
  • Installs amnesties such as signs, grills, picnic tables, fences, basketball rims and nets, tennis poles, and nets.
  • Performs tree maintenance duties. Operates chain saws. Operates chipping machine to grind brush into mulch. Uses stump grinder to remove tree stumps.
  • Inspects playground structures for compliance with established safety standards. Completes inspection and reports unsafe conditions of play equipment. Under direction, constructs, installs, and repairs play equipment to ensure safety.
  • Assists in setting up special events. Provides general assistance to park visitors. Assist in monitoring programs and events.

(Work Hours are 5:45 am - 2:30 pm) (Salary $35,898-$49,737-$63,577)
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Pass Commission medical examination.
  2. 18 years of age.
  3. Two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance, semi-skilled trade work (HVACR, plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical, carpentry).
  4. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total two (2) years.
  5. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.

All plans are optional except the Defined Benefit and Long-Term Disability plans.
Eligibility
You have 45 days from your hire date to elect your benefits. Your coverage begins on the first of the month following receipt of your enrollment forms and required documentation.
Retirement Programs
  • Defined Benefit Plan (Mandatory Participation) - Plan E excludes FOP members.

Plan C: 9%* of base salary (FOP members only) - *9.5% Effective 4/1/2023
Plan E: 4% of base salary up to maximum Social Security Wage Base (SSWB) and 8% in excess of SSWB.

    Supplemental Long-Term Disability Insurance (Employee Pays 100%)
    • Benefits paid at 66 2/3% of base salary that exceeds $108,000; capped at $216,000

    Basic Life and AD&D Insurance (Employee Pays 20%: Commission Pays 80%)
    • Two (2) times base salary; maximum benefit is $200,000 for each
    • Automatic coverage with opt-out provision

    Supplemental and Spouse/Dependent Life Insurance (Employee Pays 100%)
    • Supplemental - 1,2,3,4, or 5 times base salary; maximum benefit is $750,000
    • Spouse/Dependent Combination - $10,000/$5,000, $20,000/$10,000, or $30,000/$15,000

    Sick Leave Bank (Contribution and Benefit hours prorated for part-time employees)
    • Employees have 60 days from date of hire to enroll.
    • Employee contributes 8 leave hours each year
    • Annually covers up to 688 hours for own serious medical condition, and 480 hours for parental responsibilities (birthadoption or foster care), and 80-160 hours for serious medical condition of an immediate family member
