As a Senior Mechanical Engineer you will engage in mechanical design for innovative products geared towards enhancing super-resolution microscopy and related workflows. Providing essential support for the seamless transition to manufacturing and ensuring the ongoing sustainability of marketed products by serving as an advisor to the Product Lifecycle Engineering team.
Your Role at ONI:
- Design, build, and test prototypes of new products, subsystems, or design improvements
- Creation and updating of mechanical drawings as needed to support prototype and production manufacturing
- Interface closely with the Operations Department to support the transfer of new hardware products from R&D into manufacturing
- Maintenance of mechanical design files and Bills of Materials with proper revision control
- Support the design control process, with appropriate design review and release
- Work on New Product Introduction efforts and maturation of the Product Development Process
- Provide specialist mechanical technical support to hardware during prototyping projects
- Support Design For Manufacturing projects
- Assist in vendor selection and qualification to support a stable supply chain and minimize production delays
- Contribute to design changes to achieve improved performance of existing products based on customer feedback and internally-defined improvement projects (internal / external customer feedback)
- Work with quality team to manage corrective actions based on product faults - running root cause analysis and providing direction for corrective actions
- Provide end-of-life support for components and systems including design modifications for servicing and component replacement
Essential skills and qualifications:
- Accurate mechanical design and assembly working within tight tolerances
- Design using best practices, including GD&T
- Interpretation of technical documentation e.g., engineering drawings, standard operating procedures and quality requirements
- Able to identify improvement opportunities related to functionality, robustness, scalability
- Problem solving, including root cause analysis of manufacturing and other issues
- Design with intent and mindfulness of downstream processes and apps (DFM / DFX)
- Provided specialist mechanical technical support as part of a manufacturing or product development team
- Worked using software packages and CAD products for complex mechanical design
- Understanding of materials and appropriate applications for different products and systems
- Assembled complex systems from mechanical subcomponents with <25 micron tolerances
- Worked with customer-facing teams to implement product improvements
- Worked with R&D teams to prototype novel products
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering
Desired skills and qualifications:
- Designed systems that contained optical subsystems
- Followed work instructions for component and systems assembly and opto-mechanical alignment
- Identified & qualified technical suitability of component vendors
- Involved in continuous improvement projects to optimise production cycle times and component specifications
- Knowledge of special design considerations for precision optical/electrical measurement instruments
- Part design for injection molding
- Cable drawing design
- Cable routing design
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM
- Realistic part/assembly rendering for marketing needs
- CFD modelling
