About the role:
Samsara's Quality team enables an exceptional customer experience by enabling reliable hardware, identifying opportunities in product performance, and engaging cross-functionally to resolve key issues. Samsara's Senior ManagerFailure Analysis and Quality will develop and implement processes that guarantee the high quality standards of Samsara's hardware.
The Senior ManagerFailure Analysis and Quality, this is a role with more focus on engineering aspects, you will be responsible for leading and mentoring a team of RMA technicians focusing on deep level system and board Failure Analysis of customer facing quality issues, tracking quality metrics. You will work closely with the engineering team and production team to ensure the quality alignment for Samsara products. This role will also lead the lab engineering team, responsible for the setup, maintenance, calibration, and resource management of Samsara lab spaces. Your strong technical background, quality mindset and excellent communication skills are essential as you will be leading product quality improvement initiatives and programs.

In this role, you will:
- Manage and technically lead RMA and Lab Engineering teams focusing on system and component level Failure Analysis, testing capabilities, test execution, provide guidance, feedback, and coaching
- Coordinate with internal and external engineering teams to root cause customer quality issues, ensure corrective and preventive actions are identified, implemented, and effective
- Define and implement quality standards, metrics, processes, and tools
- Analyze and investigate defect trends that improve incoming material and outgoing product quality
- Identify opportunities for corrective actions and continuous improvement through field failure investigations
- Work with internal teams and vendors to generate Failure Analysis reports (e.g. 8D) and presentations for executive management
- Monitor and report quality and reliability metrics
- Create feedback loops to continuously improve the products in the field and the next generation
- Develop new Failure Analysis tools and methodologies for Samsara products
- Champion, role model, and embed Samsara's cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices
- Hire, develop and lead an inclusive, engaged, and high performing team
Minimum requirements for the role:
- 10+ years experience with root cause Analysis and Quality systems
- 7+ years experience people management
- MSc in Engineering, Material Science, Physics, or related field
- Experience with stress testing; fatigue testing, vibration, and shock testing, electrical stress, and environmental stress.
- Expert knowledge of Failure Analysis methodologies, tools, and techniques
- Understanding of physics of failure and the application of stresses to underlying failure mechanisms
- Experience with building out lab space with testing and analysis capabilities
- Proven track record of effective 3rd party (JDM) communication & oversight
- Experience with hardware reliability tests, third party test oversight, and test execution
- Self motivated, proactive, creative & critical problem solving capabilities
An ideal candidate also has:
- Experience working with wireless IoT devices
- Knowledge of manufacturing practices and material sciences
- Exposure to reverse logistics and return material processes
- Implementation of quality management systems
Samsara's Compensation Philosophy: Samsara's compensation program is designed to deliver Total Direct Compensation (based on role, level, and geography) that is at or above market. We do this through our base salary + bonus/variable + restricted stock unit awards (RSUs) for eligible roles. For eligible roles, a new hire RSU award may be awarded at the time of hire, and additional RSU refresh grants may be awarded annually.
We pay for performance, and top performers in eligible roles may receive above-market equity refresh awards which allow employees to achieve higher market positioning.
The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
