SENIOR MANAGER, EMPLOYEE AND LABOR RELATIONS
Global Human Resources Department
Multiple US Locations Considered

The Global Human Resources Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Senior Manager to lead our Employee and Labor Relations processes and help build a culture of respect, productivity, and trust across the organization. The Senior Manager will provide employee relations consultation and guidance to staff, managers, and senior leadership serve as the HR liaison to staff, including US unionized staff and other staff-led groups, assist with internal investigations, and oversee the exit interview process.
This position will preferably be based our New York or Washington DC office, though other locations in the United States will be considered. This position is part of the Global Human Resources team, reporting to the Chief People Officer (CPO).
The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.
Responsibilities:
1. Advise and guide departmental leadership, managers, supervisors and staff to proactively address employee relations issues in accordance with organizational policy, procedure and best practice;
2. Provide support to complaint mechanisms and complex investigations into unlawful workplace activity or violations of organizational policy, procedures or code of conduct, including by facilitating effective and approachable communications and providing progress updates, in collaboration and consultation with the General Counsel's Office and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Office;
3. In coordination with the Chief People Officer, serve as the liaison to staff, including unionized staff in the US, by participating in meetings, managing implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), training managers on HR policies and terms of the CBA, assisting with negotiation preparation and ongoing administration, and overseeing consultation and grievance processes as needed;
4. Log and track employee issues, and prepare reports for HR and other senior leaders;
5. Oversee the exit interview process including conducting interviews and compiling data to identify trends across the organization to make recommendations to proactively address workplace concerns;
6. In coordination with the HR team and DEI Office, assist with the development and roll out of staff engagement surveys, including analysis of results;
7. Collaborate with HR, DEI, and GC on developing new approaches to strengthen staff and manager relationships, through the development of trainings, coaching, resources, restorative practices, and policies;
8. Partner with other members of the Global Human Resources Division, the General Counsel's office, and the DEI Office on projects, as needed;
9. Maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information;
10. Travel to other HRW offices as needed, for meetings, trainings, etc.; and
11. Carry out other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required.
Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant work experience, preferably in a global setting in human resources with Labor Relations experience, is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
1. Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to listen, interact and communicate effectively and emphatically with all levels of globally diverse staff and other key stakeholders are required.
2. Experience advising on a wide range of employee relations issues, including interpersonal, management, wellbeing, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and other issues is required.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of labor-management relations, collective bargaining agreements, and processes is required.
4. Experience in the mediation of difficult conversations and the ability to navigate conflict and ambiguity to work towards a common solution is required.
5. A general understanding of employment law on a global scale is desirable.
6. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English is required; fluency in French or other languages is highly desirable.
7. Demonstrated excellence in critical thinking and analytical ability is required.
8. Exceptional organizational skills and ability to multitask and set priorities are required.
9. Experience with a diverse and multicultural workforce, contributing to inclusion and equity through effective employee relations, and to diversity, multi-cultural experience, and sensitivity to issues of marginalization, discrimination, and harassment are required.
Salary and Benefits: HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance. HRW offers a relocation assistance package and will assist employees in obtaining necessary work authorization, if required; people of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. If based in the United States, the salary range for this position is USD 88,000-96,000. Salary ranges outside of the US vary based on location.
