THE ROLE
Reporting to the SVP of Global Government Affairs, the Senior Director of Scientific Communications leads the development and execution of a business-integrated, multi-channel communications strategy that identifies, interprets, creates, and amplifies relevant scientific content in the field of botanical and life sciences.
Working closely with members of the executive team, CSO, and external partners, the Senior Director plays a critical role in proactively crafting and shaping a compelling, science-based narrative about the therapeutic potential of plant-based products to support human health and wellbeing.
The ideal candidate is passionate about science and health, and an excellent communicator. Lead accountabilities include the monitoring academic and science-based publications, drafting clear and concise summaries and synopsis, identifying media and external engagement opportunities to showcase the company's leadership and commitment to scientific research, and creating scientific and business content for external communication materials for various audiences including consumers, business partners, scientists and academic researchers, policy makers, investors, employees, and the public at large.
The position is also responsible for developing and maintaining a multi-channel media engagement strategy and plan that both proactively drives a steady stream of science-based content and rapidly reacts to misinformation campaigns and stories with compelling fact-based responses.
Preference will be provided to experienced candidates with excellent written communication skills and expertise in Scientific Communications, PR and Corporate Communications. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the development and execution of a business-integrated, Scientific Communications strategy and plan.
- Draft, shape and maintain a compelling, science-based narrative and talking points on the therapeutic benefits of plant-based products to support human health and wellbeing.
- Develop a monitoring and information management system for relevant scientific publications, media reports, and academic conferences.
- Create easily accessible, scientific summaries and synopsis for external communication materials, including web-content, fact sheets, FAQs, bibliographies, white papers, advocacy materials, media pitches, and press releases.
- Conduct a media audit of scientific publications, academic reports, and media stories mapping news outlets and relevant organizations' public positions on key issues.
- Develop a multi-channel media plan that both proactively delivers and amplifies a steady stream of science and consumer-based content and rapidly reacts with compelling fact-based responses to misinformation campaigns and stories.
- Identifying media and external engagement opportunities to position and highlight the company's leadership and commitment to scientific research.
- Work closely with the executive team, marketing, R&D, compliance, legal and external partners to identify media and communication opportunities, support product launches, and deliver corporate initiatives.
- Manage external agency partners and contractor as required.
REQUIREMENTS
- Advanced scientific degree (MS, PhD, PharmD, MD) or Master of Public Health.
- 8 years experience in scientific or corporate communications, preferably with a biotech, pharma, or a science-based consumer or corporate brand
- Excellent written communications skills, including a proven ability to organize, analyze and convey technical material in a clear and concise manner.
- Passionate storyteller with an ability engage and tailor messaging for a diverse group of stakeholders.
- Expertise in communication strategy, objective setting, cycle planning, KPIs, and measurement.
- Familiarity with FDA and FTC regulations, with an understanding of the dietary supplement, CBD or cannabis industry preferred.
- Strong collaboration skills with a demonstrated ability to work well at all levels of the business to achieve communication and business objectives.
- Ability to work well under pressure, both independently and with a team in a remote environment
- Proficient in computer technology, especially Microsoft Office applications and experience using multiple technology platforms.

COMPENSATION
The compensation for this role will be base plus bonus. You will participate in the organizational upside though profit share and very lucrative options/ownership plan on targeted exit events. Full medical benefits are provided as part of this role. This role also provides the opportunity for advancement in role, function, and compensation in this company or one of our other portfolio companies. This is an entrepreneurial role and the leadership team is open to unique enmities and bonus structures.
