In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Senior Director, Outpatient Services/Nursing Professional Practice is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to establish/promote professional nursing practice that is highly participative, evidenced-based, clinically excellent, and collaborative in nature. This position is also responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight to the continuum of emergency and urgent care, wound, and behavioral health services to establish and implement strategies and tactics that will develop and continually enhance the business and market leadership of MHS, including strategies to increase volume, revenue and MHS's overall market share. This will be accomplished through aligning and building relationships that will be beneficial to the health system. The Senior Director, Outpatient Services/Nursing Professional Practice develops and directs projects in conjunction with physicians, hospitals, and outside management companies/consultants that target growth through volume, revenue and core market share. In addition, this position identifies, researches, and prioritizes new opportunities consistent with strategic goals of the strategy and business development division. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.
Job Functions:
- Establishes systems and processes that ensure effective operations of assigned departments. Formulates recommendations and manages the implementation of programmatic changes ensuring quality and success.
- Consults, advises and assists the Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nurse Executive to develop and implement strategic plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes and personnel of assigned departments that supports a high-performing, patient-centered operations with a positive strategic impact.
- Transformational leader who exhibits professionalism, confidence and inspires, motivates others to a higher level of professionalism.
- Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with providers, leaders and staff to achieve results, to ensure efficient and effective process are achieved in the delivery of world-class quality care.
- Works with the Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nurse Executive, other executive team members and the Process Excellence team to investigate and resolve complex problems using evidence-based practice and coordinates those efforts to provide innovative strategies and solutions.
- Maintains a strong demonstration of labor efficiency and cost reduction/ containment. Develops the annual operating plan and budget for responsible departments and is accountable for financial and productivity projections for budget. Supports practices that maximize efficiency and productivity while minimizing variance from budget and improves financial operations.
- Establishes clear, accurate, and actionable key performance indicators and clearly establishes expectations for high levels of performance and holds accountable direct reports moving departmental staff toward achieving top-decile performance. Ensures all direct reports understand their roles in accomplishing programmatic objectives.
- Participates/Collaborates with the Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nurse Executive and executive team members in the development of strategic goals for assigned departments that align with the over-arching goals of the organization and holds accountable direct reports to goal based long and short-range strategic plans that ensure organization success.
- Participates/Collaborates with the Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nurse Executive for oversight of strategic planning, growth and operations of respective service lines.
- Complies with applicable state and federal statutes, regulations, accreditation guidelines and policies to ensure objectives are met.
- Serves as a role model for fundamental leadership principles, exemplifying evidence-based leader behaviors as well as identifying and developing future leaders to ensure organizational success in the future.
- Works with Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nurse Executive and has high impact on administrator’s workload or efficiency.
- Responsible for strong employee engagement in span of control.
- Has the authority and responsibility to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, discipline, direct, or recommend such actions by using independent judgment.
- Completes and conducts employee performance evaluations based on direct observation of their employee’s job performance.
- Assumes all other duties and responsibilities, as necessary.
Minimum Education/Experience Required:
- Current licensure in the state of Ohio or a multi-state (compact) license from state of residence as a Registered Nurse required.
- Master’s degree in related field required.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive leadership experience required.
- Ten (10) to fifteen (15) years preferred.
- Non-health care candidates may be considered but health care experiences is preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, Training:
- Demonstrated effectiveness in managing and directing departmental operations and management/supervisory personnel; a proven history of evaluating, training, and motivating performance; an ability to accomplish results through others; demonstrated skill in delegating effectively and establishing clear guidelines for accountability; and the capability to build consensus and provide strong leadership in a team environment, with the highest of professional and personal integrity.
- Excellent verbal, presentation and written communication skills.
- Ability to develop and influence others and to be responsible for making decisions, and to find solutions for or to deal proactively with issues.
- Effective working knowledge of healthcare financial management, evidence-based practice, human resource management and clinical operations.
- High performer with excellent outcomes when benchmarked with national quality standards.
