Job Description

Zap Energy, a world leader in the development of commercial fusion energy, is seeking an experienced and capable Senior Communications & Marketing Manager: a science, energy and/or technology communications expert who can do it all, work closely with fusion experts, and deftly navigate a variety of audiences, platforms and project types.
In joining Zap’s communications team, you will support a growing startup working to realize a truly game-changing technology. As such, we are looking for someone with a proven track record of building brand awareness at an international scale through high-quality strategic content and savvy for positioning and differentiating in an emerging market.
The role will have their hands on a wide range of communications initiatives, including content creation, messaging, branding, public affairs, media relations, thought leadership, events, and operations. The position will work with Zap’s Head of Communications to develop public relations and marketing strategies, coordinate with and support key stakeholders and spokespeople, and build a positive culture that allows our team to rise to meet the challenges of developing commercial fusion.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop Zap Energy’s brand voice, messaging and differentiation
  • Write blog posts, news articles, social media content and other promotional and informative materials
  • Support and help develop Zap’s communications strategy, community relationships and thought leadership initiatives
  • Use communications tools to build internal cohesion and support internal requests
  • Proactively execute on a wide variety of emerging communications opportunities and demands that will help position Zap Energy for success

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in PR or strategic communications in the areas of technology, energy and/or science
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills and a mastery of language, particularly for building online audiences
  • A demonstrated record of creating content and growing an online following for a well-regarded institution
  • Excellent organizational skills with internal drive to accomplish goals independently, expertly and on short timelines
  • Knowledge of media, marketing and communications trends
  • Enthusiasm and passion for clean energy and technology
  • A clear understanding of audiences and how to create positive ROI
  • Expertise working with digital content creation tools like blogging platforms, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.
  • 5-10 years of experience in content marketing, journalism, or another form of public communications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Clear examples of past work that communicates a topic in a way that is clever, surprising and well-received
  • Visual content creation skills and experience (i.e. photography, video and graphic design)
  • Experience in event management, such as company exhibit booths, speaking engagements and VIP tours
  • A degree in a field related to communications, marketing or public relations

Benefits of joining Zap Energy - While doing meaningful work is rewarding in itself, we also offer the following programs and benefits for all employees:

  • Competitive salary and benefits
  • Premium medical / dental / vision insurance
  • Paid parental leave
  • Retirement with company match
  • Flexible vacation and paid company holidays

The estimated salary range for this position is $100-130k. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and the actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications.  This Range is published in accordance with the Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act.

Zap Energy is building a low-cost, compact and scalable fusion energy platform that confines and compresses plasma without the need for expensive and complex magnetic coils. Zap’s sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch technology provides compelling fusion economics and requires orders of magnitude less capital than conventional approaches. Zap Energy has over one hundred team members in two facilities near Seattle and is backed by leading financial and strategic investors.

As a high-growth company in the emerging fusion energy industry, we are in the early stages of building a technology that could change history. But no one says fusion will be easy and helping people understand our work, support our mission and build the foundation for a new industry will require clear communication, smart messaging, and a strong brand.

Zap Energy Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.  All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, ancestry, color, family or medical care leave, gender identity or expression, genetic information, marital status, medical condition, national origin, physical or mental disability, political affiliation, protected veteran status, race, religion, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by applicable laws and regulations.
