Security Supervisor


JOB DUTIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

ACSO Supervisors shall be responsible for the day-to-day operations of all security posts and ACSO activities.

The ACSO Supervisor shall ensure that gates and security posts are opened/closed as scheduled and that all posts are properly staffed by trained ACSOs.

The ACSO Supervisor shall conduct post-inspections and ensure all posted ACSOs are performing their duties in accordance with post orders.

The ACSO Supervisor will ensure that weekly and daily schedules are filled, and posted and that any adjustments to the schedules are made to ensure payroll is accurate.

The ACSO Supervisor will perform other duties as assigned.

The ACSO Supervisor will ensure that ACSOs perform all assigned duties which include:

Access Control

  • Stand post at the entry/exit points to verify all persons’ identification and conduct inquiries and surveillance of suspicious items, packages, and people.
  • Ensure individuals do not depart with government material unless they are authorized to do so.
  • Verbally challenge individuals who are approaching restricted areas.
  • Direct individuals who cause a disturbance to leave the property.
  • Operate traffic control points.
  • Close off areas to traffic, establish perimeters, and set up barricades to secure incident scenes or facilities.
  • Control access to incident scenes.
  • Help ensure the integrity of a crime scene, maintaining it in its original condition until law enforcement personnel take over.
  • Coordinate the receipt, issuance, and tracking of all keys, key cards, lock combinations, vehicle passes/decals, etc.
  • Identify suspicious persons or vehicles.

Screening

  • Inspect packages, briefcases, containers, or any other items in the possession of people entering or leaving a Federally controlled facility.
  • Operate metal detectors to search visitors for prohibited items.
  • Operate X-ray machine to search deliveries and visitors’ packages, equipment, and hand-carried articles for prohibited items.
  • Conduct vehicle inspection that may include inspecting under seats, in the trunk, and under the vehicle.
  • Conduct frisks or pat-downs for weapons or other unauthorized items.

Visitor Processing

  • Verify proper identification of visitors required for issuance of visitor badges.
  • Process visitors.

Patrol and Response

  • Inspect appropriate countermeasures, including facility-critical protection points and classified containers.
  • Inspect facilities for hazards, mechanical problems, and unsafe conditions and report problems to appropriate authorities.
  • Close and secure open windows, doors, gates, or other access points.
  • Manually open and close heavy gates and doors.
  • Conduct patrols in accordance with routes and schedules contained in post orders.
  • Inform dispatcher of present status and changes in conditions.
  • Patrol locations in areas which are potentially hazardous to the public (e.g., construction sites).
  • Inspect the perimeter, property, and buildings for hazards, intruders, and suspicious activities.
  • Observe the environment for suspicious vehicles or persons on or around Federal property.
  • Review maps, floor plans, diagrams, or other information to become familiar with facility and property boundaries.
  • Evacuate individuals from dangerous and/or life-threatening situations.
  • Guide and assist first responders (e.g., with scene management or security).
  • Assess the condition of injured individuals.
  • Perform basic first aid in response to emergencies.
  • Administer CPR.
  • Administer/deploy AED.
  • Use a fire extinguisher to put out a minor fire.
  • Request emergency assistance in response to traffic accidents.
  • Assist in conducting accident/incident scene searches/investigations (e.g., check visitor logs, video) in search of relevant evidence and information to determine the facts of the situation.
  • Follow directions to and respond to emergency and routine calls for service until the situation is resolved or until relieved by a higher authority.
  • Investigate the source of suspicious odors and sounds.
  • Pursue fleeing individual(s).
  • Escort money, valuables, or people to provide security.
  • Escort facility tenants and visitors to and/or from their vehicles after hours.

Common Tasks

  • Report potentially threatening situations and violations of law and security procedures.
  • Observe unique characteristics of an individual for identification purposes.
  • Collect information about stolen or missing property or suspicious activities to aid investigations.
  • Take detailed field notes so reports can be completed.
  • Write and/or provide oral situation reports regarding security-related information (e.g., accidents, bomb threats, unlawful acts, characteristics of individuals).
  • Communicate with individuals to establish rapport.
  • Adjust communication to ensure understanding.
  • Provide direction or information to tenants or visitors.
  • Advise persons relative to problems, situations, etc.
  • Encourage people to approach by using effective non-verbal communication (e.g., making eye contact, smiling, greeting a person cordially, and nodding).
  • Communicate with rude or abusive people.
  • Use body language to project control and influence.
  • Use voice commands to project control and direct actions.
  • Explain rules, regulations, and procedures to individuals.
  • Interact with a subject who does not speak English.
  • Interact with a subject who has communication impairment (e.g., is deaf, has a speech impediment).
  • Interact with a subject who has mobility impairment (e.g., is blind, is wheelchair bound).
  • Interact with the public, including children.
  • Interview witnesses to obtain descriptions of possible suspects or descriptions of what happened.
  • Advise appropriate personnel of potentially hazardous conditions (e.g., slippery floors).
  • Communicate with first responders.
  • Testify in court regarding criminal activity or other incidents.
  • Report misconduct of other Security Officers.
  • Ensure all security equipment is activated and operating properly; if not, report to proper authority.
  • Inventory physical objects (e.g., keys, keycards, vehicles, visitor badges) and log accordingly.
  • Locate and review documents and information (e.g., logs, lists).
  • Read memos and other written material to acquire and maintain knowledge.
  • Participate in search for missing child.
  • Activate alarm systems.
  • Provide backup assistance to LEOs and other ACSOs.
  • Maintain situational awareness regarding individuals’ body language, projected attitudes, and intentions.
  • Care for and maintain firearms.
  • Participate in firearms training.
  • Participate in training in the use of intermediate force weapons to be used in emergency situations.
  • Use intermediate force weapon to temporarily incapacitate a violent individual.
  • Operate firearm to protect self and others.
  • Maintain positive control and retention of firearms and intermediate weapons at all times.
  • Use defensive tactics to prevent or control the movements of individuals.
  • Defend against violent combative person(s) to prevent injury to self or others.
  • Physically control individuals displaying disruptive or violent behavior


DESCRIPTION

MUST HAVE AN ACTIVE "SECRET" SECURITY CLEARANCE ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

Shift is M-F, 2200 - 0600

Seeking excellent Full-time - Nights, Supervisor Security (Cleared) For Federal Facility that provide Armed Contract Security Officer (ACSO) supervisory services throughout the area of operations on the NIST Gaithersburg, MD campus. The required services include armed security force management and staffing; monitoring alarm activities; detecting, deterring, and reporting safety/security hazards, unauthorized, illegal, or potentially life-threatening activities; performing visitor screening and processing, patrolling campus grounds, and responding to emergencies or calls for assistance and Dispatch Center Operations. The purpose of services is to maintain a secure environment in which Citizens and Government employees can conduct business with confidence.

Law Enforcement Authority - The Security Force can be the cornerstone of an effective physical protection program. The effectiveness of an integrated security system of locks, barriers, lighting, cameras, intrusion detection systems, and access control systems, while critical to the success of a security posture, ultimately depends on the response by a skilled Security Force.


JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • ACSO Supervisor MUST have a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance.
  • ACSO Supervisors MUST have excellent writing skills (12-grade level or higher with proper grammar) and be able to produce a variety of written documents including, but not limited to, incident reports, disciplinary reports, and any written documentation as assigned.
  • ACSO shall have a background with a minimum of two years of successful experience in Field supervision (civilian community law enforcement, military service law enforcement, or commercial/industrial security force service). ACSO supervisor shall also have:
    • Three years of full-time security experience within the past five year
    • Three years of US Military (active duty or reserve)
  • Must maintain a professional, well-groomed appearance at all times
  • Must pass physical and drug screening
  • Must meet all ACSO training requirements
  • Must have Maryland Wear and Carry Permit
  • Must have Maryland Guard License

Additional Job Requirements:

  • DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY (DHS) SUITABILITY FOR POSITION OF PUBLIC TRUST

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

$40.64 total hourly rate, of which $35.37 is the base rate and $4.57 is health and welfare (maximum of 40 hours per pay period week of health and welfare) and $.70 is the pension contribution (maximum 40 hours per pay period week).

  • Paid on a semi-monthly pay schedule
  • The position is considered non-exempt by the company in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act
