Job Description TITLE: School Nurse Teacher
WORK YEAR: 181 days (with up to 5 additional days), or as contractually designated
REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Director of Student Services
DIRECTLY SUPERVISES: N/A
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor, provides health and wellness services to students in individual and classroom settings. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community. Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.
CERTIFICATE/LICENSE REQUIRED:
Certificate required by the Rhode Island State Department of Education. Current Rhode Island Teacher Certificates in the appropriate subject area and level. School Nurse Teacher PK-12 or evidence of substantial progress of completing the
requirements for certification prior to the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES:
1. Implements the district's Comprehensive Developmental School Health and Wellness Program and ensures that students achieve
the competencies included in that program.
2. Serves as a resource to advisors and faculty.
3. Consults with teachers regarding individual and classroom behavior issues, as requested.
4. Coordinates with parents and staff regarding students with medical needs that must be addressed in the school setting.
5. Participates in RTI, IEP and 504 meetings.
6. Interprets medical results and school records of students for parents and other faculty and staff members and provides training as appropriate, e.g.: Epi-pen, health-related screenings.
7. Coordinates the administration of testing and screening, as necessary.
8. Counsels students regarding educational and health related concerns in concert with the administration and other appropriate
professionals.
9. Counsels students with health and wellness issues and refers them to appropriate school personnel and/or community agencies.
10. Helps to de-escalate emotional/medical situations.
11. Meets with parents and appropriate staff to discuss health issues, records, and pertinent transition information.
12. Meets with parents and assists with referring to community health agencies, as needed.
13. Serves as a resource to parents (e.g., information sharing) and an advocate for students.
14. Confers with State and community agencies regarding health and medical needs.
15. Forms strong working relationships with the other district nursing staff.
16. Submits reports as directed in a timely fashion-both electronically and paper.
17. Uses student information system and online systems effectively and efficiently.
18. Assists in registration process when needed.
19. Implements health curriculum in elementary classes as needed.
20. Adheres to the Rhode Island Educator Code of Professional Responsibility.
21. Works collaboratively with peers at the school and district level to improve teaching, learning and educational programming for
students.
22. Performs other duties as designated by the building Principal.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Communicate and detect information at levels to be able to make presentations and exchange information in person and on the
telephone
2. Express oneself in a manner that others will be able to clearly understand
3. Constantly operate a computer keyboard and manipulate paper
4. Ability to detect, determine, perceive and identify documentation and reports, and observe students
5. Able to meet multiple demands from several people and meet deadlines with severe time constraints
6. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, in both indoor and outdoor environments, and to move
and traverse in order to maintain a safe learning environment
7. Stamina to work irregular or extended hours to include a full day and then attending meetings or supervising evening events
8. Work at a desk, conference table, small student classroom table, or in meetings in various configurations
9. Position self to be able to retrieve items overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally
10.Move and transport moderately heavy objects

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS:
1. Demonstrated proficiency with PC-based computer applications, Google Suite, Microsoft Office applications, e-mail, Web applications, and industry-specific technology.
2. Clear Criminal Records Check in accordance with RIGL 16-2-18
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
181 day school year
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the RI Model for Educator Evaluation and Support Professionals.

About Portsmouth School Department
The Portsmouth School Department (PSD) comprises four (4) schools that serve approximately 2200 students and an administration building. Portsmouth High School is a comprehensive 9-12 high school, Portsmouth Middle School 5-8, Hathaway Elementary School K-4 and Melville Elementary School PreK-4. PSD employs approximately 340 staff members including teachers, administrators, counselors, nurses, and support staff including clerks, maintenance, custodians and paraprofessionals.
