GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
To develop and implement comprehensive Health Service Program that advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement of students. The Director will lead the development and implementation of a Nursing Program across all PPSD schools Pre-K-12. The Director will lead a team that facilitates positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The Director of Nursing Services is supervised by the Chief of Student Support Services.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The Director of Nursing Services supervises and evaluates the Health Medical Clerk, School Nurse Teachers, Lead School Nurse Coordinator, Transportation & Registration Nurses.
- Grade PK-12 and School Nurse Teacher
- National Board Certification for School Nurses (Preferred)
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Conducts or participates in studies or research related to the school Health Programs. Develops an annual budget and orders the Nursing Health Supplies and Equipment
- Contributes to the understanding of School Health Programs through public relations and inter-agency activities. Cooperates with community health agencies
- Works in collaboration with Medical Director/Consultant, Health Educations, Nurse Teachers and other PPSD departments as required to provide health services to students
- Is knowledgeable about rules and regulations pertaining to the School Health programs
- Consults with Physicians and The Office of Specialized Instruction & Exceptional Student Services Executive Directors/Managers to assist them with the interpretation of public health laws and establishment of procedures governing the readmission of pupils in connection with infectious diseases or improper immunizations.
- Coordinates, plans and provides in-service training for:
- School Nurse Teachers, Lead Nurse Coordinator, Transportation and Registration Nurses.
- Assists in the planning and implementation of professional development for School Nurse Teachers, Lead Nurse Coordinator, Transportation Nurses, Registration Nurses and other professional personnel where applicable
- Serves as a liaison to the Rhode Island Department of Health, Hospitals, Clinics, Physicians, and the Rhode Island Department of Education
- Create, coordinate, and implemented training program for new school nurses
- Coordinates with school/nurse teachers for scheduling of physicians to complete required medical examinations
- Implements and coordinates with Dentist awardee to do yearly screenings for students K-5 and in Grade 7
- Serves as the district lead on all COVID related matters
- Oversee Home/Hospital Instruction for students with medical issues/concerns including authorizations and coordination
- Authorizes and signs off on out of district placement for regular education students in need of educational services
- Is responsible for reviewing and signing off on all medical request for bus transportation needs
- Works in collaboration with outside agencies regarding counseling and crisis Intervention services for students
- Coordinates all school health related clinics such as flu clinics, vaccinate before you graduate clinics
- Develops an annual budget and write all RFP's pertaining to the needs of the health office and orders the Nursing Health Supplies and Equipment
- Conduct yearly review of all policies and procedures for school health to comply with federal and state mandates
- Ensures that all students are in compliances with states requirements for vaccinations, physical examination and screenings
- Assumes other responsibilities as assigned.
- Support/Coordinate PPSD SMART Clinics
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief of Student Support Services

- Current license to practice as a registered nurse and;
- Successful experience as a school nurse teacher for a minimum of 5 years and;
- Master's Degree in Health Education or related field preferred and;
- Leadership experience and;
- Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and format
