TITLE: School Registered Nurse
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Registered Nurse.
2. B.S. N. preferred, not required.
3. Valid State of Connecticut R.N. license to practice professional nursing.
4. Current certification in CPR.
REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Nursing Services.
JOB GOAL:
1. Implements the process and follow-up of diagnosing human responses to actual or potential health problems.
2. To provide the best physical and mental health care for all students thereby creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools.
3. Educate staff and students in the appropriate use of services offered in the Health Office.
4. To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absences due to illness and create a climate of health and well-being in the district schools.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Collaborates to develop programs that meet the identified needs of students, families and school personnel.
2. Delivers effective prevention programs and services.
3. Coordinates health services for students.
4. Delivers effective screening and assessment services.
5. Delivers a continuum of effective nursing intervention services from early intervention through crisis response.
6. Assists students in monitoring and directing their personal development and capabilities.
7. Delivers effective referral and liaison services.
8. Collaborates and consults with other medical professionals to provide effective and efficient services.
9. Evaluates students’ outcomes to ensure high-quality services.
10. Executes the medical regimen under the direction of a licensed Physician or Dentist.
The school nursing program maintains written policies and procedures to ensure quality of services and district wide uniformity.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten month year, unless noted. Salary and work year by contract.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Supervisor of Nursing Services.
Evaluation of School Nurse is systematic, appropriate to meet the individual needs of evaluated staff members, and consistent with school nursing standards of practice. See CSDE document, Evaluating Pupil Services Specialists (1993); the Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice (ANA, 1998), School Nursing Practice: Roles and Standards (Proctor, Lordi and Zaiger, 1993); Roles and Qualifications for School Health Personnel (Connecticut Advisory School Health Council, 1997); and Standards of Professional Practice (National Association of School Nurses, 1998).
Evaluation of individual School Nurses on discipline-specific clinical competencies is conducted only by a supervisor with credentials and expertise in school nursing.
