Overview
The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and Energy Systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.
The Distributed Systems Group (DSG) is focused on designing, testing, and applying edge solutions to enhance the resiliency and efficiency of our Nation's infrastructure and of distributed sites that rely on that infrastructure, while paving the way for integrating large numbers of devices into a holistic energy system.
Responsibilities
DSG is seeking a Research Engineer to help advance the operational practice and capability of the electric system to adapt, control, and integrate Renewable Energy resources, from aggregation of distributed systems through to onboarding new technologies at all scales. The candidate will work with a team to investigate far-reaching innovative strategies for decarbonized Energy Systems. The ideal candidate will have domain knowledge in renewable and storage technology, energy equity, distribution system engineering & infrastructure, or related fields. We are seeking a motivated professional with strong communications skills who anticipates contributions from clean Energy Systems in emerging grids. This position will be mentored by Research Engineers and analyst with rich industry, community, and research experiences.
Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Write and communicate public-facing primers on transmission infrastructure, substations, hardware, both the physical characteristics and component-level purpose and function.
  • Contribute to approaches to electricity generation and transmission technology selection and siting to support energy policy goals.
  • Analyze forward-thinking electric system services requirements in decarbonized grids (beyond energy) and identify strategies to meet them.
  • Conduct research and analysis to support laboratory reports on topics such as energy policy, technology innovation, modeling approaches and regulatory functions.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary teams to tackle high impact problems.
  • Work with business development leads to expand the research portfolio and respond to funding opportunities.
  • Cooperation in multi-disciplinary teams to take the above knowledge and integrate it with experts in conservation, recreation, finance, and local governance.
  • Work with a variety of communities to provide technical assistance related to resilience and Renewable Energy goals.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA or higher

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field with emphasis on distribution system engineering & infrastructure.
  • Experience within the electricity sector, such as with an electric utility, project developer, balancing authority, system operator, and/or the energy policy community.
  • Knowledge of non-energy value contributions available from various Renewable Energy generators and how these may differ from conventional generators.
  • Demonstrated understanding of system operator or utility functions and of state and federal utility regulatory structures.
  • Demonstrated experience working with communities, beyond stakeholder outreach and engagement.
  • Understanding of power generation business models and an awareness of generation or transmission planning processes.
  • Demonstrated awareness of generation or transmission planning paradigms.
  • Understanding of optimization techniques and experience developing and/or deploying analytical tools within a power systems context.
  • Demonstrated communication aptitude, including technical writing and presenting to varying audiences.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
