Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

Responsible for performing independently, tasks of a skilled nature, necessary for the operation, maintenance, repair and remodeling of Fred Hutch buildings, grounds and equipment.  Must be proficient mechanical, plumbing and refrigeration skills and possess a class 3 boiler licenses.  Additionally, should have working knowledge in at least two of the following areas:  architectural, electrical, welding, HVAC, building automation, steam and hot water systems.

 

The employee will be expected to work day shift for 6 months for training before night shift is scheduled. 

Responsibilities

Individual will be assigned primarily PM, mechanical and/or architectural skills work orders and be expected to complete them independently; Including estimating the work both in terms of time and material, liaison with customers, executing the work and completing all the required paperwork, such as updating as-built drawings.  Individual will work the grave shift Sunday through Thursday or work 4 10's Sunday through Wednesday. Individual may also be assigned to work with and/or train apprentices.

 

Type of work to be performed include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Changes Filters, belts, bearings and bushings and must know how to align and tension appropriately
  • Must be able to use the building control system to safely shut down air handlers and other pieces of operating equipment.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, showers, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.
  • Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem or repair machine.
  • Dismantles defective machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts.
  • Replace motors and motor components up to 100 HP.
  • Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.
  • Lay out, assemble, install, and maintain piping systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and repair and replace gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipment.
  • Repair and maintain physical structure of establishment.
  • Open valves on equipment such as compressors, pumps, and condensers to prepare system for operation and starts equipment and auxiliary machinery.
  • Observe temperature, pressure and ampere readings for system and equipment and adjust controls or override automatic controls to obtain specified operation of equipment.
  • Make periodic inspection of equipment and system to observe operating condition and need for repair or adjustment.
  • Adjust controls to isolate and clear broken lines for repair or shut down equipment.
  • Repack pumps and compressors, cleans condensers, and replaces worn or defective parts.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as lathe, grinder, drill, and milling machine to repair or fabricate machine parts, jigs and fixtures, and tools.
  • Operate cutting torch or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
  • Build, repair, and install counters, cabinets, benches, keyboard trays, partitions, floors, doors, building framework, and trim.
  • Install glass in windows, doors, and partitions.
  • Replace damaged ceiling tile, floor tile, and wall coverings.
  • Installs items such as window shades, venetian blinds, and curtain rods, wall fans, and door locks for tenants. Visually inspect and test machinery and equipment.
Qualifications

OE I: A skilled professional who generally has over 5 years of experience building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work or completion of at least two years of trade school and two years experience.

 

OE II: A skilled professional who has 3-4 years of experience in the operation or repair of one or more of the systems listed above.

 

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years' experience in boiler room operations, equipment maintenance, construction, or similar trades related to mechanical maintenance.
  • Must have current Grade III City of Seattle Boiler Operator License or be able to obtain one within 6 months.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's License or ID.
  • Physical skills necessary to climb, bend, stoop, lift and perform tasks utilizing ladders and scaffolds, etc.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Dependable, on-time and proven good work habits.
  • Good communications skills.
  • Able to work a varied schedule including shift work.

OE I:  The hourly contracted rate for this position is a flat rate of $45.93, which is inclusive of a $7.75 Central Pension Fund diversion.

 

OE II: The hourly contracted rate for this position is a flat rate of $39.18 which is inclusive of a $4.89 Central Pension Fund diversion. 

 

 

Position is eligible for shift differentials, premiums for licenses, and other wage premiums as governed by the collective bargaining agreement.
