Research Engineer
- (3276812)
A Research Engineer is sought to support the development of new optical sensing systems being developed by the Evans Lab for research and clinical applications through all development phases, including design, prototyping, fabrication, validation, utilization, and maintenance. Highly desired qualities are creativity, attention to detail, and experience with chemistry and materials chemistry.
The engineer will participate on multiple projects and assist in the planning and synthesis of chemical and material components in new devices, reviewing and documenting the manufacturing process for in-production devices, and troubleshooting the performance of existing systems. Example projects include the synthesis of carbon dioxide sensor materials and testing and integration of sensing materials.
Working Conditions:
May work in research laboratory or clinical site with potential exposure to biological agents, e.g., blood-borne pathogens, hazardous electrical, e.g., high voltage, or mechanical energy. Occasional lifting of heavy objects, typically not exceeding 75 pounds/person may be requested. MGH policies governing appropriate laboratory attire will be followed including use of personal protective equipment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Planning of chemical and material synthesis
2. Develop chemical and material systems
3. Design, fabricate, and validate chemical and optical sensors
4. Produce sensing elements
5. Design and implement chemical and optical testing methods.
6. Document new and existing chemicals, materials, and procedures to facilitate manufacturing
7. Validate the conformance of new materials and sensors to specifications.
8. Troubleshoot and take corrective action for components and systems not meeting specifications.
9. Perform other related duties as required.
Education:
BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related technical field required
Experience:
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in chemistry, materials chemistry, or chemical engineering in a hospital, industry, or academic setting preferred.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:
1. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of scientist, engineers and medical doctors
2. Ability to diagnose and solve technical and/or system problems of moderate complexity
3. Knowledge of synthetic and materials chemistry
4. Computer literacy to the level of at least word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, statistics, engineering tools and programming
5. Experience using analytical chemistry techniques, including MALDI MS, NMR, IR/Raman
6. Skill in technical writing
