- must have rodent/mice Colony Management experience
- starts off on a 6 month contract, extending to 12 months, with the high possibility of conversion full time based on performance/attendance and budget approval!
- 1st shift M-F
- Pay: $25-30/hr
The Colony Management Specialist will work closely with vivarium management to maintain multiple mouse colonies including multiple breeding schemes, timed breeding, collection of samples for genotyping, and weaning. They will routinely handle live rodents to perform all Colony Management duties. The Colony Management Specialist will be responsible for understanding basic rodent care as well as breeding strategies, basic rodent genetics, and rodent identification. They will also be responsible for maintaining all colonies within a GLP facility and must have strong written and verbal communication.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Must have a strong understanding of and adhere to standard operation procedures and guidelines regarding personnel and animal safety.
- Understand, develop, and optimize breeding schemes for multiple traditional and transgenic rodent colonies to provide for study needs.
- Adhere to and promote animal welfare, GLP guidelines, and facility standards.
- Maintain multiple rodent colonies including breeding, collection of genotyping samples, weaning, and pup identification.
- Communicate regularly and thoroughly with vivarium management, veterinary team members, and laboratory study staff.
- Performs related job duties as required.
Desired Education and Skills:
- Bachelor’s required, life sciences preferred (animal science, genetics, or similar field)
- Laboratory animal experience required.
- Confidence when handling rodents.
- Experience in the management and breeding of traditional and transgenic rodents.
- Skills to coordinate and maintain breeding records for laboratory animals both hard copy and electronic.
- Experience in a research environment and understand basic study principles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow verbal instructions.
- Passionate about Animal welfare.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications: Word, Excel, Outlook systems.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize shifting demands and workload.
