Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.unc.edu) is one of six health science schools (Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Social Work, Public Health, Medicine) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is one of the oldest health science academic programs at Chapel Hill. The School teaches approximately 600 PharmD students and 145 graduate students. The individual in this position will provide research support in the laboratory of Dr. Klarissa Jackson in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics (DPET). The Research Assistant with work under the supervision of Dr. Jackson to assist with sample preparation and liquid chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis for quantifying cholesterol metabolites (oxysterols) from human plasma samples. The person in this position will also assist with research supply ordering, assay set-up, data analysis, and communication with collaborators involved in the research. The Research Assistant will be required to follow laboratory safety protocols and complete training in human subjects research prior to working with human samples.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:* Excellent organizational and communication skills (including written and verbal communication)
* Working knowledge of appropriate laboratory techniques (e.g., pipetting) and safety compliance procedures (e.g., safety procedures for working with chemical and biological hazardous materials)
* Ability to work independently with a high level of responsibility and accountability
* Ability to follow laboratory protocols
* Proficient in use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
* Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology or related science disciple
* 1-2 years of previous research experience in a biomedical, pharmaceutical, or biological sciences laboratory
* Experience with data management and analysis, such as with statistical analysis and graphing software
* Experience with sample preparation and LC-MS/MS analysis
* Experience with record keeping and administrative responsibilities
* Ability to read and understand the scientific literature
