About the Department:The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences’ mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil, and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, and devise effective and sustainable crop production systems. Devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings. Disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels, and fiber in North Carolina, the nation, and the world.
Essential Job Duties:The Forage and Grassland Program is seeking a Research Assistant with excellent record-keeping, organizational, and communicational skills, who will independently support and coordinate research and extension efforts of the Forage and Grassland Program. The Research Assistant will be responsible for the assessment, strategic planning, data collection, and management of research-demo field plots, as well as laboratory projects, focused on the management of forages and grazing.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serving as the state coordinator for a climate-smart grasslands project which encompasses coordination with County extension agents and producers.
- Designing and implementing field and laboratory projects focused on improving pasture-based livestock systems.
- Plant, set up, and collect data from soils, plants, and livestock-related responses.
- Ability to work with livestock in grazing trials when needed.
- Management of inventory.

- Post-baccalaureate degree in Agronomy, Plant Sciences, Soil Sciences, Agriculture and Biology, and Ecology, or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantive relevant independent experience. May require a terminal degree and licensure.
- Knowledgeable about agriculture and agricultural practices.
- Competency with office software (excel, word) and Google tools (calendar, Google Forms, Gmail).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent organization skills.
- Basic knowledge about safely conducting research activities and using research equipment in the field and laboratory.
- Knowledge of plant science, soil science, and fieldwork which enables contribution to and troubleshooting of research experiments.
- Post-baccalaureate degree in related field
- At least three years of relevant experience in Forages/Agronomy/Soil/Crop/Animal Sciences or a related field are required.
- Experience supporting graduate students and post-docs.
- Experience presenting results in research and extension settings.
- A valid NC Driver’s License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
- A valid Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment.
