Summary/Objective
The Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) RN is responsible for the placement of PICC lines, midlines and ultrasound guided IV access. In addition to standard clinical duties, the PICC nurse is responsible for the IR team. This individual has the accountability and responsibility for the clinical operations ensuring that efficient and effective nursing care is provided to individuals undergoing an interventional procedure. The PICC nurse makes decisions independently and in collaboration with the Clinical Coordinator to promote the attainment of hospital goals in accordance with its mission.

- Maintains personal and staff awareness of current developments, evidence based practice and trends in nursing research with a focus on the specific patient population in which they are employed.
- Perform an overall assessment of the patient.Under the direction of the physician, make appropriate assessments of the patient that requires access through a peripherally inserted central catheter.
- Placement of the line under the supervision of the physician, ensure correct insertion and placement of the line.
- Prioritized, individualized quality patient care consistent standards.Identified patients at high risk for standard IV complications.
- Places PICC lines, midlines, peripheral IVs with or without ultrasound guidance; for those patient who meet criteria. Obtains and maintains the education and competencyas appropriate for the insertion and care of these lines.
- Provide education and is a resource for ancillary departments regarding the maintenance and troubleshooting of PICC lines.Participates in the clinical oversight of student trainees.
Required Education and Experience
Graduate of an accredited nursing program
2-4 years related experience
Required License/Certifications
Current RN license in the state of Texas
BLS certification
ACLS certification
