The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Diseases, is seeking a qualified candidate for a Research Technician position. Areas of investigation include disease modeling in laboratory mammalian specimens, understanding mechanisms of viral pathogenesis and the role of host genetics and host immune responses in disease, and the development and evaluation of vaccines and therapeutics. The Research Technician will be responsible for assisting in the planning, conduct, and analysis of experiments, maintaining lab records and inventories, ordering of supplies, and for general lab organization. The technician will be expected to maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook that is updated in real time. The technician will also assist in data processing, statistical analysis, and graphic presentation of data. This individual will be expected to conduct difficult/complex lab testing, develop methods and procedures to be used in research protocols and experiments, and aid with grant proposals, reports, and research publications.
This position requires knowledge of basic molecular and immunology techniques such as plasmid purification, RT-PCR, molecular cloning, cell culture, transfection, ELISA, neutralization assays, virus growth, and murine models. The incumbent must be able to troubleshoot experiments, perform biologic, virologic, and immunologic assays, and work hands on with mammalian specimens. The ideal candidate will be exceptionally organized and detail oriented. The incumbent must either have experience with all of the noted laboratory techniques or a willingness to learn new methods. The position will require flexibility with shift/hours, depending upon experimental needs. Experience working with BSL-3 pathogens is preferred. The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain Department of Justice clearance to work with Select Agent and Toxins. Two years of experience is required. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement. This position is located at BST in Oakland. PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required prior to the start of employment. Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related scientific field is required. Two years of experience is required. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement. Experience working at Biosafety Level 3 is preferred.
