Form of work*This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program*
Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking a highly motivated individual for an exciting one-year Internship with the Sheriff's Office. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting the Administration division's initiatives while participating in a developmental training cohort with peers. Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience.
Under the direction of a supervisor and mentor the intern will assist with the following:
Supporting PUBLIC SAFETY agencies in website design and content management;
Incorporating multimedia elements, including images, videos, infographics, and interactive features, into web content to enhance engagement;
Ensuring that web content aligns with County and agency policies, regulations, and guidelines; and
Ensuring web content complies with ADA accessibility standards.
Minimum: Recent, 2022 and/or 2023 college graduates earning either a Bachelor's or a Master's degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the internship must have:
No significant professional-level work experience (less than one year) in internship field;
Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours; and
*Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.
Degree Requirements: Computer Science, Communications, Information Systems Technology, or related field.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or above (Applicants may be asked to provide official transcripts) and experience in any of the following:
HTML5, Java, jQuery or other programming languages;
Content Management Systems such as OpenCities;
Photoshop or other graphic design software;
Creating responsive web designs; and/or
IT service management software applications.
Driver's License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability or willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Polygraph/Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. A pre-hire polygraph examination will also be conducted due to the sensitive nature of the role. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. A pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check will also be completed before hire.
Work Hours: Monday - Friday, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with some flexibility between those hours. Some telework is available with prior approval from the supervisor.
This is not a full-time remote opportunity. Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.
