POSITION DESCRIPTON
Position Title: EMT Instructor
Department/Unit: Allied Health Programs
Classification: Part-time faculty
Status (exempt or non-exempt) Exempt
Salary/Grade: Reports To: Director of Nursing and Allied Health Programs
Percentage Part time
Annual/Academic Year: Term to term
POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Dean of Allied Health/Director of Nursing, teaches college courses and provides lab at Oregon Coast Community College (OCCC), evaluates students' work, maintains appropriate records, and holds office hours. This position will primarily be located at the North Campus in Lincoln City.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES- EMT INSTRUCTOR
Teaching and Student Success:
Instruct students, using approved course outcome guides and accurate syllabi.
  • Prepare instructional materials as needed.
  • Meet all assigned classes.

Apply the college's values for teaching and learning.
  • Facilitate learning that applies to students' academic and career goals.
  • Meet the curricular needs of students at various learning levels.

Encourage mutual responsibility for a supportive learning environment.
  • Provide effective teaching strategies in an environment that encourages student and instructor interaction.
  • Actively engage students in the learning process.
  • Encourage creative and critical thinking.
  • Evaluate and grade student progress.
  • Maintain accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and scholastic progress.

Professional Responsibilities:
Work collaboratively with colleagues and community partners.
  • Participate in institutional work (such as accreditation and shared governance) to advance the College mission.
  • Attend and participate in meetings that are regional and state, college-wide, department, and program level.
  • Assure effective two-way communication at all levels of responsibility.

Undertake activities that promote and support: student success by
  • Mentoring students
  • Participating in Faculty development

Maintain office hours
Interact with students, staff, and administration in a professional manner
Compliance
  • Comply with published College Policies and Procedures.
  • Compliance with Oregon Health Authority through the Emergency Medical Services education regulations for the state for the state of Oregon
  • Maintain a safe learning and working environment by following all laws, policies and procedures established by the College and through state and federal oversight (such as OSHA and Title IX).

Maintain College safety standards in work areas
  • ensure that students are trained in good safety practices
  • make reasonable efforts to ensure that students follow good safety practices.

Other duties as needed:
  • Requires a flexible work schedule to meet program needs. EMT courses are taught on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 1800-2120 at the OCCC North Campus in Lincoln City.
  • Ability to work an instructional schedule that may vary from term-to-term.
  • Use of media aids, the library, and other resources, as applicable.
  • Assist with the coordination and execution of the EMT certification exams.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Faculty will typically teach 1 course per term.
EMS 105 - EMT Part I: Course Description - Develops skills for the recognition of symptoms of illness and injuries and proper procedures of emergency care. Requires passing a criminal background check and drug screen before placement into mandatory clinical observation in hospital emergency department and ambulance ride-along experience. Part 1 of the 2-part Oregon EMT course.
EMS 106 - EMT Basic Part ll : Course Description - Continues EMS 105, Oregon EMT preparation. Includes preparation for state and national certification exams.
EMS 135 - Advanced EMT Part I: Course Description - Develops skills for recognizing symptoms of illness and injuries. Covers proper procedures of emergency care at the Advanced EMT level. Requires passing criminal background check and drug screen before placement into mandatory clinical and internship experience. Part 1 of the 2-part Advanced EMT course.
EMS136 - Advanced EMT Part II: Course Description - Develops skills for recognizing symptoms of illness and injuries. Covers proper procedures of emergency care at the Advanced EMT level. Continuation of AEMT Part I. Part 2 of the 2-part Advanced EMT course sequence.

SUPERVISES THE FOLLOWING STAFF
No supervision.
Requirements
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current Oregon Certification as a Paramedic
  • Good standing with the state office of authority that approves and issues candidate's professional license.
  • Have at least three years' experience in prehospital emergency medical care
  • Current certification as CPR provider and Instructor with American Heart Association
  • Current certification as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider and Instructor
  • Current certification as a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PEDS/ALS) Provider
  • Current certification as a (Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support) PHTLS or Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) Provider
  • Completed an Instructor Development Course through Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST), Fire Service Assessment Battery (FSAB I & II), or the National Fire Protection Association NFPA 1
  • Possess required immunizations Have at least three years' experience in prehospital emergency medical care
  • A demonstrated working knowledge of how to operate appropriate equipment specific to pre-hospital emergency medical care, data gathering, and emergency communications.
  • Ability to effectively integrate EMT equipment into laboratory presentations.
  • Knowledge of appropriate public health and safety standards related to emergency medical care.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Assignment will include teaching at all OCCC sites within Lincoln County. Travel between College sites and other locations may be required as needed. Periodic travel and overnight stays outside of Lincoln County may be required for meetings, professional development, and other purposes.
Light physical exertion with occasional, moderate lifting, bending, stooping, and pulling. Instructor will also be required to lift, push, pull, carry, or support patients, mannequins, equipment, or materialsexceeding 60 lbs. in weight on an intermittent basis. Mobility to move between offices, classrooms, and floors. Ability to hear the conversational voice and effectively communicate responses. Visual acuity to read and evaluate student work and complete and maintain various types of records.
The use of tobacco and smoke-emitting materials and devices including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited on all the college's campuses, including OCCC's building exteriors and parking lots.
