This position is responsible for coordinating the development of burn center psychosocial programming for patients, families, and staff. Programming is specific to burn camp, school reentry, regional and local support groups, survivors offering outreach recovery, and national burn survivor support network. In conjunction with aftercare programing, this position is also responsible for assisting the Burn Center Social Worker with direct clinical counseling to inpatients of a preventative and developmental nature through direct consultation with patients and families. Therapy activities include individual, group and couples counseling. The incumbent develops program criteria for areas of specialization in trauma, addiction, mindfulness and behavioral interventions This position has the authority to assess and diagnose psychiatric emergency patients; deem if and when to hospitalize or civilly commit patients; and determine what resources a client and family requires resolving or diminishing a crisis.

Responsibilities

  • Assists burn center manager in supervision of Burn Camp coordinators.
  • Assists burn center manager with fundraising activities for the Burn Camp program, which may include grant writing, coordinating sales events, developing publicity materials, and attending meetings and presenting information to corporate donors.
  • Trains camp staff regarding their role in providing emotional support to meet the needs of the burn survivors, as well as sexual misconduct education, teamwork, and conflict resolution.
  • Facilitates participation in the program by identifying and inviting pediatric, adolescent, young adult and adult burn patients, reviewing applications, and communicating with their families throughout the year about the experiences of the Burn Camp and the emotional needs of burn survivors.
  • Investigates, develops, and promotes new programs and support systems for burn survivors of all ages.
  • Collaborates with outreach educator to provide patient specific school reentry programming.
  • Facilitates survivor and families attendance to national Burn Programming conventions.
  • May participate in case conferences, patient care planning meetings and with community health agencies to facilitate continuity of care and coordination of services.
  • Assists with community outreach activities, i.e., professional counseling, lectures, in-service training and preventive education programs.
  • Coordinates and supervises volunteer programming for SOAR program.
  • Facilitates and plans for weekly regional support group programming.
  • Assesses psychosocial history, develops and implements individualized treatment approach to meet the needs of each patient and their families.
  • Works in close collaboration with all members of the treatment team including medical doctors, to further their understanding of significant social and emotional factors contributing to the patient's well being.
  • Identifies appropriate outside resources, such as community agencies, to assist patients with resuming life in their own community and how to live with the patient's limitations.
  • Develops treatment plans to enhance patient/family coping, maximize participation in care and optimize social skills necessary to re-enter the community following a burn injury.

  • Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.
  • Care is appropriate to the population served.
  • Representative challenges of this position include successfully managing the Burn Camp's fundraising campaigns which provide total funding for the program and enables many adolescents to attend who are otherwise unable to pay.
  • The incumbent must effectively build relationships within the community, gaining support for the Burn Camp Program, and coordinate the camp activities and volunteers to be most beneficial to the adolescent burn survivors' experience at the camp.
  • The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Qualifications

QualificationsRequired
  • Four years directly related experience.
  • Experience with conflict resolution when counseling individuals, couples and groups.
Licenses Required
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • One of the following
    • Current Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.) certificate for clinical practice in the State of Utah.
    • Current license to practice as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the State of Utah.
