Job Description
Gate Bioscience is a venture-backed, preclinical biotech company creating a new class of medicines called Molecular Gates. Our therapeutics are small molecules that aim to cure diseases by selectively eliminating harmful extracellular proteins at their origin: inside the cell. Every extracellular protein— of which there are more than 4,000—must pass through a single channel in the cell before it can be secreted into the body. Molecular Gates bind to this channel, setting up a “gate” that recognizes and blocks a specific, disease-causing protein from exiting. With nowhere to go, the protein is degraded instead of being secreted. By eliminating the harmful protein at the source, Gate aims to eliminate the disease for patients. Founded in 2021, Gate is backed by Versant Ventures, a16z Bio + Health, ARCH Venture Partners, and GV. Learn more at www.gatebio.com.
The Role:
The Protein Science role is a growth opportunity for a bench researcher with an aptitude for protein purification and biochemical assay development and execution. Come work at the frontier of drug discovery, on a difficult and high-value project at the intersection of Protein Science and structural biology.
We are seeking a highly motivated and independent researcher, one who brings exceptional skills and is ready to learn new techniques, and who is excited by the challenge of developing a new class of medicines together.
In this role you will:
- Optimize and run in-house protein purification pipeline
- Provide support for developing and executing biochemical assays both internally and with external CRO partners
- Develop expertise in Cryo-EM grid prep
- Effectively execute and interpret experiments in line with project timelines and goals, and in collaboration with teammates from drug discovery and structural biology
What to expect if you join us:
In the first month, you will work closely with our Protein Science and structural biology team to get up to speed on our protein production, protein biochemistry, and structural biology technologies at Gate.
By three months, you will be regularly producing recombinant proteins, optimizing purification processes, and developing new expertise in protein biochemistry assays and Cryo-EM grid prep.
By six months, you will have optimized the protein production workflow and will be supporting protein biochemistry assay development and execution, both internally and externally with CRO partners. You will become a linchpin in the company for expertise and technology development in this area.
Required Skills:
- Protein purification expertise – cell lysis, protein handling, and FPLC purification, and quantification. Added benefit if experienced with membrane proteins, and/or in the context of structural biology studies.
- Construct design for protein variants and basic molecular biology (plasmid cloning, amplification, etc.)
- Experience with plate based biochemical assays such as Fluorescence Polarization, TR-FRET, and others is desired
- Experience with lab automation is a plus
- Exceptional hands and organizational skills
- Experience with LIMS systems and good record keeping via ELN
Education:
- BS/MS in biology, biotechnology, bioengineering, or related fields
- 0-5+ years of relevant research experience in industry or academia.
Compensation:
Below is the expected salary range for this position. Individual compensation is based on various factors, including level, experience, education, skill set, and geographic location. This range is for our San Francisco Bay Area, location and may be adjusted to the labor market in other geographic areas.
Target Salary Range: $68,000-$138,000
In addition to salary, Gate Bioscience offers equity in the company, a robust benefits package, 401(k) program with employer match, and the opportunity to be a part of ground-breaking research.
