Description/Duties & Responsibilities
Under the direction of a Recreation and Community Services Coordinator, this position assists in implementing the Aquatics program. This includes scheduling, training, and supervising assigned part-time seasonal staff and/or volunteers, and performing a variety of programmatic and administrative support functions for Aquatics. This position regularly requires the ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and the ability to work outdoors in severe inclement weather and be exposed to pool chemical fumes, dust, or other air contaminants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assists with the coordination, direction, implementation, and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the City's six aquatic facilities and year-round programming
• Assists with supervising, recruiting, training, scheduling, leading, and evaluating approximately 150 part-time seasonal lifeguards and recreation leaders, contract employees, and volunteers; assists with assigning work area responsibilities, including scheduling, programming, and maintenance functions
• Provides customer service to program participants and the general public, including responding to public inquiries, supplying accurate information, and fulfilling customer needs over the phone, through e-mail, and onsite at aquatic facilities
• Assists with planning, coordinating, and implementation of aquatic programs, special events, and work schedules
• Assists with, monitoring and tracking aquatic facility budget expenditures related to lifeguard staff and aquatic programming and provides input for future budget preparation
• Manages program inventory and purchases program supplies, office supplies, pool maintenance equipment, uniforms, awards, and other supplies as needed
• Tracks and prepares reports, including, but not limited to, attendance numbers, employee hours worked, first aid incidents, and staff work schedules
• Assists with the creation of the Aquatics section of the City's quarterly Seasons brochure
• Assists with the creation, preparation, and teaching of American Red Cross Safety Training classes
• Assists with marketing materials to publicize various aquatic programs and events
• Assists with ensuring the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center's Daktronics timing and digital matrix scoreboard information systems are routinely updated and in working order before each event or competition
Education and Experience
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• One year of experience in recreation and community services program area, preferably in aquatics
• Associate's Degree is highly desirable
• Possession of American Red Cross certificates in Lifeguard Training, CPR/FPR, AED, and Title 22: First Aid for Public Safety Personnel
• Possession of American Red Cross Instructor certificates in Lifeguard Training, CPR/FPR, AED, Water Safety, and Title 22: First Aid for Public Safety Personnel, or ability to obtain within six months
• Possession of Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certificate or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate or ability to obtain within six months
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license
• Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary will be considered
Knowledge and Abilities
• Knowledge of rules, regulations, codes, techniques, principles, and procedures pertaining to aquatic programming, facility operations, and lifeguard services
• Ability to assist with planning and directing aquatics-based programs at multiple facilities, year round, seven days a week, simultaneously
• Knowledge of swimming pool water quality and chemical basic standards
• Knowledge of and ability to use Daktronics digital matrix scoreboards and computerized timing systems
• Strong leadership skills and the ability to supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate employees, including the ability to provide constructive feedback, resolve difficult employee issues, and enhance teamwork
• Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, professionally, and positively both verbally and in writing, in one-on-one settings or when giving formal presentations to large groups of people
• Strong fiscal management skills and the ability to perform simple mathematical calculations, maintain and track budget information, and maintain program attendance and other records as assigned
• Strong computer skills and the ability to be resourceful with website management and computer programs, such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Rec 1 registration software
• Strong organizational and follow-up skills and the ability to effectively prioritize a variety of project and program challenges in a fast-paced work environment
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, outside agencies, and the public
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn quickly
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to provide program information to customers in a professional and courteous manner
• Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
• The ability to work outdoors in severe inclement weather and be exposed to pool chemical fumes, dust, or other air contaminants
• Ability to lift or drag indoor office or pump room equipment and outdoor pool deck equipment weighing 50 pounds or more and assist lifeguards with lifting children or adults weighing up to 150 pounds or more out of pool during rescue procedures
• Ability to swim 400 yards in 7 minutes and 30 seconds or less during annual lifeguard recertification swim test

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency. Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
Compensation includes enrollment in California Public Employees' Retirement System as a replacement for Social Security plus a competitive benefits package. All appointments are made at step 1 of the salary range unless otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
