Founded in 1988, the Lavender Youth Recreation & Information Center (LYRIC) has a mission to build community and inspire positive social change through support and services for LGBTQ2IA+ youth, their families, and allies of all races, classes, genders, and abilities. The organization offers 5 branches of programming for youth including in-school Q groups, internships, mentorship, housing navigation, health care and mental health referral, and more. Position Summary
We are hiring for a Program Coordinator position open on the Youth Leadership team. The Youth Leadership Department is currently comprised of the following programs:
SLI Core: This is a paid workforce development internship for LGBTQQ youth and allies ages (14-18). SLI youth learn about a variety of topics including social justice, gender identity & sexuality, and how to understand intersectional identity politics/identify intersecting identities in themselves. The youth are also taught financial literacy and workforce development skills through a resume/cover letter workshop, interview skills activity, and a financial literacy workshop.
UndocuWorkforce: Like SLI Core, this is a paid workforce development internship for LGBTQQ youth and allies ages (14-24), helping undocumented youth and allies explore similar subjects as SLI Core as well as the intersections of being queer and undocumented. This internship also supports youth individually to help youth develop and complete personal goals
The Program Coordinator position is in a bargaining unit represented by OEPIU Local 29.
Next fiscal year, our funding may shift to include some exciting additions under the Youth Leadership department such as an SLI Core 2.0 option for youth to continue on in a second round of internship as well as the creation of a Youth Advisory Board.
Duties
Responsibilities
- Conduct program outreach, interviews, and program curriculum for youth interns
- Provide accurate documentation for housing navigation services offered and provided
- Develop strength-based, social justice-centered programming
- Work with youth to develop and complete personal goals
- Run intern selection process including applications and interviews
- Maintain database of youth records and information
- Supervise and manage intern final projects
- Coordinate educational scholarships
- Handle budgeting for supplies, materials, and independent contractors
- Refer interns to other wings of programming for broader support as needed
- Support the planning and implementation of each internship cohort
- Develop outreach strategies
- Attend staff meetings as well as other organizational retreats and gatherings
- Play an active role in shaping the Health & Wellness Team's strategic plan for promoting community wellness
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Understanding of positive youth development framework, youth-adult partnership frameworks and knowledge of LGBTQQ youth issues
- Understanding of social justice, restorative justice, and systems change
- Knowledge of San Francisco and Bay Area resources, especially for LGBTQQ youth, youth of color and their families
- Broad and deep knowledge of LGBTQQ community and issues impacting LGBTQQ youth
- Fluency in Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish, highly desirable . Bilingual applicants are highly encouraged to apply.
Experience
- Preferably two years of experience providing case management, counseling, housing services, family support, advocacy, educational services, or workforce development services to youth
- Experience with diverse models of working with youth (i.e. understanding of principles of youth development, youth-adult partnership, harm reduction, positive sexuality, HIV/STI prevention)
- Experience working with transgender youth, young women, youth of color, youth with disabilities, young men who have sex with men (YMSM), youth living with HIV, system-engaged youth, immigrant communities, youth engaged in sex work, youth who are homeless / marginally-housed, and other historically marginalized groups
- Experience working with families of LGBTQQ youth
- Competent in working in a multiracial, multicultural, multi-gendered, and intergenerational environment
- Experience with data collection and reporting
- Experience developing effective collaborations with other agencies and communities
Qualities/Attributes
- Self-motivated and able to take initiative, manage, and complete multiple projects within deadlines and within budget
- Strong youth-centered support framework for survivors of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse
- Excellent written/verbal communication and facilitation skills
- Action-oriented with excellent problem-solving skills
- Ability to seek out, encourage, and exchange appreciative as well as developmental feedback with youth, colleagues, and supervisors
- Ability to address challenges directly by de-escalating conflict and fostering mutual understanding
- Commitment to ongoing one's self-improvement/professional development and LYRIC's long-term sustainability
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
Compensation
This position is full-time and non-exempt. The starting salary is $30.58 Hourly. LYRIC uses an equity-based model of compensation; we offer a fixed pay rate for staff according to position and tenure with an annual pay increase per the union contract and pending board budget approval.
