Job description

About us

Shorthand exists to empower creative teams to produce and publish beautiful transformative content radically faster. We’ve begun our journey by creating an easy-to-use platform for one of the most creatively and technically demanding use cases on the web — immersive feature stories — and we’re proud to count many of the world’s best known and most discerning publishers, brands, not-for-profits, and universities as loyal customers.

Shorthand is a growing, investor-backed company with customers on every continent (except Antarctica!), and there’s never been a more exciting time to join our band of geeks with art and heart.

We're looking for a Product Marketing Manager to bring our rapidly evolving product to new customers around the world.

What you’ll be doing

As Product Marketing Manager at Shorthand, you’ll play a key role in helping us understand our users and how they think about our product. You’ll develop a deep understanding of the market we operate in, how our product is positioned, and the business segments we sell to, and you’ll use this to craft compelling messaging frameworks. Reporting to the VP of Growth, you’ll work cross-functionally to launch new product features and collaborate on marketing campaigns aimed at acquiring, retaining and expanding customers. You’ll have a finger on the pulse of what’s resonating with current and potential customers, and you’ll help map this back into product strategy, positioning and execution.

Shorthand runs a product-led sales go-to-market motion. We leverage the product and user-generated content loops to drive leads and signups, and monetize through self-serve, inside sales, and expansion-focused enterprise sales. Prior experience with marketing a product with a similar go-to-market motion would be beneficial but is not required.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Become an expert on our market, customers, users, and competitors, and document these in a succinct form that can be shared with the broader team.
  • Understand our product inside out, and become an expert user of the product.
  • Create messaging frameworks that effectively communicate product features and benefits.
  • Help ensure the messaging is deployed consistently across marketing materials, support resources, product UI copy, and other contexts.
  • Work closely with colleagues in sales, customer success, engineering, design, and other functions to develop alignment and seamless execution of Product Marketing strategies.
  • Coordinate feature and product launches, working with our product development team, the CEO, and other stakeholders.
  • Create high quality marketing materials — such as product walkthrough videos, email copy, and website copy — to support product and feature marketing, and contribute to overall marketing strategy.
  • Assist with the production of bottom-of-the-funnel content such as customer case studies.
  • Work with colleagues in sales and design to create compelling sales enablement content.
  • Identify opportunities for product improvements and innovation.

What we’re looking for

The successful candidate will have:

  • A bachelor's degree in marketing, business, journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Proven experience in Product Marketing or a closely related role, preferably in the tech space. Experience working in a B2B SaaS company would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, particularly as applied to product messaging. Where possible, please include links or examples of your work in your application.
  • A demonstrated track record of translating technical concepts for a largely non-technical audience.
  • A passion for visual communication and storytelling on the web.
  • A desire to work in a fast-paced, rapidly-scaling international team.

You’ll be a great fit for our team if:

  • You are whip smart and have exceptional attention to detail.
  • You are collaborative and know how to work with others to meet shared goals.
  • You gain deep satisfaction from helping others reach their goals — especially our users and customers.
  • You are a proactive self-starter who does not need to be told what to do and will be resourceful in order to find solutions to any challenge.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced and demanding environment, and possess a high level of intellectual curiosity.
  • You are intrinsically motivated, deriving happiness from a job well done.

Why work for us

We offer:

  • Options for working your way: fully remote working, flexible hours, and an allowance for a co-working space if you prefer.
  • True autonomy, with freedom to own and grow the role you occupy.
  • The opportunity to work in a growing SaaS company that is still small enough that you can make a real impact.
  • An allowance for setting up your home office, a laptop, and any peripherals you need to do your job.
  • An Employee Option Plan for all team members.
  • A Health and Wellness fund to support your healthy lifestyle, as well as access to coaching and counselling services.
  • 401k and a 75% contribution to your health, vision & dental insurance for US-based team members.
  • Paid parental leave if you are growing your tribe.

The base salary range for this position is $90,000 - $115,000 USD. Base salary ranges are determined by multiple factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skills and local market benchmarks.

Shorthand’s interview process

We value direct communication here at Shorthand and want to be transparent on how we hire. Our process involves:

  • An initial Zoom screen: You’ll have an informal Zoom meeting with the hiring manager to discuss your background, the role, and what led you to apply.
  • A work task: We’ll ask you to complete a take-home task, similar to the work you’ll be doing in the role, using our software platform. This should take approximately 2-4 hours. This helps you to develop familiarity with our platform ahead of meeting with the hiring panel and helps us to verify that you’d be a great fit for the role.
  • Interviews: You’ll have interviews with the hiring panel over Zoom. This means you’ll typically get to meet another 3 people from Shorthand, including our CEO.
  • Final checks: The successful candidate will undergo a reference and police check prior to us sending the final employment agreement.

Our workplace is 100% distributed and all interviews are conducted virtually. Please let us know of any reasonable accommodations you may need during the interview process.
