Principal Systems Engineer - Digital Systems

At Tennant, we are expanding and growing in exciting areas such as autonomous robots, IoT/Connected machines, and new power sources.  We are seeking a Principal Systems Engineer with a strong, demonstrated background in electrical systems design, integration, and program execution to join our team. • Experience leading electrical design activities including cost and schedule estimation.
• Leading technical teams to work through structured problem solving and root cause analysis.
• Ability to adapt and drive progress when design aspects are not fully defined or evolve over time.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work closely with the product managers and other cross-functional stakeholders to translate business requirements into well-designed, implemented, and documented solutions.
• Establish functional requirements and performance targets for electrical control systems.
• Develop new ideas/hypotheses, conduct quick Proofs-of-Concept (POCs) to validate them and de-risk development.
• Lead technical design of machine control systems to solve application challenges.  Focus on requirements, interfaces, and reuse/maintenance of solutions.
• Work as part of a cross-functional team to execute complex engineering projects including leading and actively participating in design reviews.
• Collaborate with internal teams, vendors and design services teams to implement and maintain solutions.
• Understanding of electrical system elements and development process, including power control systems, wiring harnesses, printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), embedded software, and regulatory testing (UL, IEC, EMC, ESD, EFT).
• Applying applicable industry standards and ensuring design compliance.
• Evaluating design risks using tools like DFMEA and HARA.
• In partnership with the broader engineering leaders, generate system design innovations that deliver value to the customer.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• BS in Electrical, Software or Computer Engineering with 7-10 years of experience. Job levels are determined based on a candidate's skill set and past experience. 
• Proven track-record in electrical architecture design and implementation in a technical leadership role. Hands-on experience building & deploying control solutions incorporating new and legacy systems.
• Experience with electrical systems integration, including: harnessing, connectors, cable routing, mechanical protection (sleeving), and electrical protection (fuses, circuit breakers).
• Experience with an object-oriented programming language such as C#, Python, or C++.
• Prior electric vehicle electrical system design highly desirable.
• Experience working on cross-functional teams (Mechanical, Hardware, Systems, Software, Production, Supply Chain, etc.).
• Experience in requirements decomposition, development, authoring, and verification.  Experience with requirements management tools and interface control documentation.
• Experience de-risking complicated projects by breaking them into development milestones and proof-of-concept efforts.
• Experience with task management tools and defect tracking tools (Jira).
• Ability to present complex technical information to internal and external stakeholders.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

• Experience in physical systems modeling, analysis, and simulation using tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, MathCad, or PSpice.
• Expertise in control system modeling, design, and verification using tools such as MATLAB and Simulink.
• Experience with communication interfaces and networks including CAN, RS-232, Ethernet, and USB.
• Expertise in designs using batteries and chargers including lead-acid and lithium-ion types
• Power electronics, power systems, and closed loop control systems experience preferred.
