Principal Electrical Engineer

Our motion control group is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineerto join our team. The ideal candidate is an experienced, hands-on engineer with a strong desire to bring their innovative thinking and influence to Copley’s product line.

This position is primarily in-person in Canton, MA and reports directly to the Director of Engineering.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Design PCB-level mixed analog/digital, interface and power electronic circuits and assemblies to meet product specification and cost requirements
• Create bills of materials, schematics, drawings, and engineering change orders using Agile (Product Lifecycle Management tool) to fully document production-ready designs
• Perform engineering analyses and write test plans, specifications, and test reports
• Have primary responsibility for the successful completion of performance, design verification, compliance, and similar tests for all products within area of responsibility
• Provide technical expertise in support of the production of customer-oriented documents like datasheets, user guides and application notes
• Maintain awareness of new component developments and emerging technologies relevant to motion controls and use/recommend them for new designs where appropriate to achieve cost, performance and size goals

Required Qualifications:

• A BS in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
• 10+ years of direct, PCB-level, design experience with μC/FPGA based systems containing mixed signal, interface and power conversion circuitry (7+ years with advanced degree)
• Ability to think and create across technical disciplines (mechanical, thermal, firmware/software, test)
• Possess an understanding of control theory as applied to power conversion and motion control
• Ability to work both independently and as an enthusiastic, accountable, and collaborative member of the Motion team
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience with all phases of PCB design flow – specification, schematic capture, DFM/DFT and layout
• Working knowledge of PCB design tools (Orcad Capture, PADS or Allegro)
• Proficiency with laboratory test equipment including oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies and multi-meters
• Familiarity with EMC and Electrical Safety standards and requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
• Experience designing PWM inverters using controllable switches including MOSFETs and IGBTs at power levels and system voltages up to 20kW and 480VAC respectively
• Experience designing systems or components used in motion control applications
• Ability to design magnetic components used in power conversion circuits
• Working knowledge of Matlab and Simulink modeling and simulation tools
• Experience with Functional Safety (FS) standards and requirements
