Engineering a world of possibilities

Post-Doctoral Fellow - Mechanical Engineering - Continuous Casting Center

The Continuous Casting Center (CCC), directed by Professor Brian G. Thomas, is seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher to conduct research on computational modeling of the Continuous Casting of steel. Visa sponsorship is available for this position if needed. This posting may be used to fill multiple openings.

About the Department
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is focused on education and both basic and applied research that addresses problems of national interest in the areas of solid mechanics, materials and manufacturing, thermal-fluid systems, systems/operations engineering, advanced manufacturing, biomechanics, robotics and automation. The undergraduate enrollment in Mechanical Engineering is 1,770 with approximately 25% women and 24% underrepresented students. Approximately 200 graduate students (20% women, 40% underrepresented) are enrolled in Master's and Ph.D. programs - both in person and online. We pride ourselves on strong, project-based undergraduate course offerings that apply theoretical knowledge and engineering skills in classroom activities and team projects. We maintain a high-quality, well-funded research program (~$17M in annual research awards) with strong participation from students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Major specialty programs include advanced manufacturing, robotics, automotive engineering, biomechanics, aerospace engineering, energy systems and systems engineering/operations research. More information can be found at www.mines.edu and mechanical.mines.edu.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on the Continuous Casting of steel that is of practical interest to industry, by combining computational modeling with validation data from plant experiments provided by interested steel companies

  • Prepare and submit journal publications on this research, under the direction of Professor Thomas
  • Provide leadership and mentoring of other researchers (graduate, undergraduate students, and visitors) in the CCC in the candidate's areas of expertise

  • Prepare and make presentations to industry on this research

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Pay Range

Mines is offering a salary rate of: $62,000 - $68,000.

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate's education, training and experience as well as the position's scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.

Notice all documents are to be uploaded in a single box. References will not be contacted until later in the selection process. This position will remain open until filled. However, for full consideration, applications should be submitted before February 4, 2024. Please follow this link to apply. Contact Kathleen Feighny in HR at kfeighny@mines.edu with any questions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering ,Metallurgical engineering, or a similar engineering field

  • Proven knowledge of computational modeling software involving heat transfer, computational fluid dynamics and/or stress analysis, such as Ansys Fluent and / or Abaqus

  • Previous experience conducting research involving process modeling, applying computational modeling to real world problems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience in computer programming (eg Fortran, Matlab, C, python, etc)

  • Knowledge of computational methods such as finite-difference and/or finite element methods

  • Other relevant experience such as expertise and experience in metallographic analysis, running laboratory water model experiments (the CCC lab features a 1/3 scale water model of the Continuous Casting process), and / or commercial plant measurements.
