SUMMARY:

As a member of the engineering design team, the Plumbing Designer will assist in designing domestic water, sanitary, storm, natural gas, and medical/lab gas systems for hospitals, offices, schools, and other facilities. These properly designed systems keep people safe, provide proper conditioning for critical areas and operations, and minimize facility energy consumption. Specifically, this role supports the design development, production, and delivery of engineering documents relating to facility plumbing systems. The Plumbing Designer creates system drawings using Revit and coordinates with the design team using Building Information Modeling (BIM). Responsibilities include learning and developing skills relating to system design, equipment selection, vendor coordination, and construction administration (CA) support. This position reports to the Plumbing Engineering Team Leader.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & KNOWLEDGE:

  • High school diploma required. Bachelor of Science in Engineering preferred.
  • 1-5 years of mechanical drafting and/or design experience from concept to client delivery in Plumbing Design, Building Plumbing/Mechanical Systems, and Central Utility Plants.
  • Experience working on healthcare, government, education, and/or technology project design.
  • Basic knowledge of integrated design and architecturally significant buildings.
  • Proficiency in Revit and BIM required.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
  • Basic knowledge of building codes.
  • Basic knowledge of domestic water, sanitary, storm, natural gas, and medical gas systems and equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of plans, sections diagrams and equipment schedules, and drawings.
  • Healthcare experience preferred.
  • Willingness to visit project sites to support the construction of the system designs.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Develops and modifies Revit models of mechanical systems and components including piping diagrams, system distribution, and fixture & equipment schedules, according to established standards and Revit modeling techniques with guidance from the Project Engineer.
  • Checks model for design interferences with other building elements and resolves conflicts.
  • Produces equipment schedules and details making changes and adjustments as necessary with input from the engineering team.
  • Selects fixtures and equipment using results of design calculations, such as water heaters, pumps, compressors, and skid packaged equipment.
  • Assists Team Leader and Project Manager in ensuring that documentation for all phases conforms to QA/QC and Johnston Best Practice Standards.
  • Visits project sites during construction administration to conduct quality, progress, and compliance review with design documents.
  • Mentors and directs the work of less experienced design team members.
  • Actively seeks new knowledge related to engineering practices, principles, and regulation changes.
