Job Summary

Participates and coordinates in all activities of pharmaceutical care as dictated by level of education and ability determined by school records and director evaluation and supervised by pharmacists. Requires deductive and problem-solving skills demonstrating independent decisions and actions as required. Must be able to respond appropriately under pressure. Must be able to manipulate pharmaceuticals; operate equipment necessary for compounding, preparing, and labeling in preparation for dispensing medications; provide excellent customer service through telephone etiquette and personal face-to-face interactions. Maintain quality and integrity through the processes of IV preparation, medication unit dosing, read physician orders, order entry, and Pyxis utilization. May have involvement in inventory control practices and safeguards for patient safety to possibly include inspection and security programs and charging/crediting. Maintain professional conduct, representation, education and vigilant innovation toward the improvement. Provide project support as determined by the department director and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • The student is expected to show progression through academic achievement and promotion.  Level of progression is reviewed by both academic record and AD assessment and requires supporting documentation.  Successful progression will be recognized as follows:
  • Entry Student:  Must be eligible for licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in the state of Indiana.
  • Pharmacy Student:  Acceptance into an accredited Pharmacy program.
  • Further progression requires obtaining of Indiana State Pharmacy Intern License.
  • P3:  Accepted/initiated the 3rd professional year
  • P4:  Accepted/initiated the 4th professional year
  • P5:  Accepted/initiated the 5th professional year
  • P6:  Accepted/initiated the 6th professional year
  • Graduate:  Successfully graduated from NABP accredited pharmacy program and acceptance of offer letter as a registered pharmacist for Marion General Hospital.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage. 
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Developed computer skills and the ability to learn and proficiently perform patient care applications, echarting, email and other standards applications related to the department operations and job function.
  • Strong customer service skills, with special emphasis on patient centered care. 
  • Ability to promote compassion and a therapeutic environment. 
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.
  • Ability to manage multiple issues simultaneously and appropriately prioritize based on patient needs. 
  • Basic working understanding of concepts of infection control principles to prevent the spread of infection to patients, self and others. 
  • Ability to react appropriately in any environment or situation. 
  • General awareness and understanding of legal implication of patient care activities and self-performance while performing job duties. 

Working Conditions

  • Typical hospital clinical environment with frequent standing and walking. 
  • Work may be subject to interruptions. 
  • Risk of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious, electrical and radiation hazards. 
  • Works with protected health information. 
  • Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.

Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment

  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, walking, sitting, reaching, bending, kneeling or stooping to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Uses computer and other standard office equipment. 
  • Uses patient care tools and equipment as they relate to area of clinical specialty.
