Safety Professional - This job requires a Bachelor's Degree
Job Summary
The Marathon Los Angeles Refinery (LAR) supporting Carson and/or Wilmington, CA locations has a full-time, exempt opening for a Safety Professional. The position reports to the Safety Supervisor and will be part of a team of experienced Safety professionals. The Safety Professional provides technical safety supports and promotes a safe working environment. Ensures compliance with state, federal, and company safety regulations. The hours of the position are: 9/80 schedule, 5/40 schedule and 4/1 schedule, support on-call once every two months and support TAR at least once a year.
Key Responsibilities:
- Comply and monitor safety metrics to identify risk areas and trends and to facilitate continuous improvement in safety performance. Formulate safety measures and plans to reduce potential adverse impacts.
- Perform safety inspections. Member of incident/near-miss/accident investigation teams. Identify corrective actions to resolve safety hazards and eliminate risks of workplace injury.
- Provide input into maintenance, projects and turnaround planning to ensure integration of safety issues and requirements into design specifications, schedules, bid packages. Assess equipment and work processes from a safety perspective to identify areas of improvement. Advise operations and craft teams on safety issues in pre-job planning and hazard control. Review hot work, confined space, and other permits.
- Interpret applicable safety regulations. Develop, review and revise refinery's health and safety related policies, procedures, and programs. Develop and deliver safety training.
- Promote facility's safety awareness program. Serve as role model and champion for safety and safety compliance.
- Participate in Management of Change (MOC), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and related reviews as necessary.
- Support assigned Area Team(s)
- Provide safety training
- Responsible for maintaining and updating assigned procedures standing instructions as needed.
- Champion the safety observation and audit programs
- Support evacuation drills.
- Support Safe Work Permit process.
Education, Experience and Skills:
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum or related) with at least 2 years of relevant years of experience; OR Bachelor's degree in HES related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience in a process industry. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
- Good understanding and knowledge of Federal Safety regulations.
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Detail-oriented, excellent prioritization and time management skills.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook. Strong computer skills and ability to work with/manage databases and data required.
- Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
- Must have a valid driver's license. (MPC determines valid status.)
- Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
- Travel Requirement is 10% or less.
