Minimum Qualifications One year of experience in the operation and / or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility. In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OROne year of military service in any of the military branches; ORAn Associate’s or higher-level degree, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years' experience as a trade’s assistant under the supervision of a skilled trades-person.
Duties Description Under supervision of higher-level park management, the incumbent performs semiskilled maintenance and repair work in one or a combination of trade areas. The incumbent is expected to use motor-driven equipment and hand tools in the performance of assigned tasks. Incumbents, in learning and perfecting their skills, may perform journey-level activities under supervision or after receiving detailed instructions. Typical assignments include but are not limited to the following duties:• Perform and supervise lower-level employees engaged in maintenance activities including mowing, refuse removal, cleaning, and painting.• Clean and maintain various hand tools and electric tools such as handsaws, loopers, and weed whackers. • In winter months, the incumbent will perform and assist in snow and ice removal, involving both manual shoveling and operating snow removal equipment and vehicles. • Operate trucks, tractors, Bobcats, snowplows, power saws, and other self propelled equipment.• Perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities in a variety of trades, such as carpentry tasks (minor wood replacement and building repairs), plumbing tasks (faucet changing and bathroom winterizing), electrical tasks (changing switches and light fixtures, light bulbs, and breakers), masonry (pouring sidewalks and pads), and mechanical repairs (oil changes, sharpening blades, replacing belts and hoses).• Landscape grounds on natural and artificial turf and performs building maintenance, including restroom cleaning, while using green practices and a variety of tools. • Prepare written reports in response to specific assignments and in the course of supervising lower level permanent and seasonal staff.• Assist in emergency situations by applying emergency procedures and practices, directing staff, and working with patrons to minimize potential problems. • Work closely with volunteers, the community, other facilities, and vendors to ensure NYS Parks’ mission is always met. • Perform a variety of administrative duties such as assisting with inventories and data collection for work orders.• May be tasked with administrative tasks
