JOB SUMMARY:

The Packaging Manager oversees the Packaging Team and execution of all beer packaging processes. This position reports to the Director of Continuous Improvement and Operations.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advocate for safety first in every process and ensure team is following all safety guidelines
  • Manage the Packaging Team
    • Participate in interviewing/hiring
    • Training and annual re-training
    • Shift schedule
    • Time off requests, weekly timesheet approval
    • Pre-shift department meetings, in collaboration with Lead Operators
    • Individual check-in meetings, performance reviews, conflict resolution
    • Advise on team structure and recommend adjustments to maximize talent
  • Manage operations within Packaging Department
    • Comprehensive understanding of all packaging equipment operating principles and best practices
    • Oversee execution of weekly packaging schedule
    • Ensure quality at the source measurements are performed as advised by Quality Manager and adhere to quality decision trees based on the measured values
    • Coordinate purchases of materials with Supply Chain
    • Monitor labor costs and packaging supply expenses relative to budget
    • Basic and Advanced reporting in Orchestrated Beer (OBeer), training provided
    • Understanding of monthly and yearly production goals
    • Understanding of capacity and how to meet forecasted demands
    • Maintain accurate standard operating procedures (SOPs) with completed hazard analysis for each process
    • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for department such as loss and operating efficiency
    • Maintain and enforce good manufacturing processes (GMPs) for department
    • Ensure systems are in place to maintain accurate inventory counts of raw materials and finished goods
    • Coordinate with maintenance department to troubleshoot equipment issues and stay current on equipment preventive maintenance (PM) to avoid unplanned downtime
  • Work packaging shifts in event of being short-staffed
  • Continuous improvement of packaging processes
    • Lean-based exercises aimed at eliminating waste through efficiency, safety, workflow, warehouse layout, and quality improvements
    • Participate in design and commissioning of new equipment for the area

PLANNED MILESTONES OVER TIME

  • Months 1-3: complete HR manager training classes, receive training on ERP software, complete safety training, shadow in all areas of packaging and other areas of production as needed, develop ongoing training plan for team, establish feedback and communication cadence with team, training on monthly inventory procedures, training on ordering supplies for department
  • Months 3-6: Collaborate with Maintenance and CI to brainstorm ideas and develop plans for expanded Autonomous Maintenance, improved reliability and uptime, minimizing product loss, and improving overall efficiency. Develop SOPs, workflows and training for new automated keg line that will be commissioned
  • Months 6-12: Work with Maintenance, OEM and Director to successfully install and commission new keg line. With input from team, optimize workflow for incorporating this new equipment. Implement previously developed training plan

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Possess a passion for working within and continually improving a robust safety culture and ensuring the packaging team operates in a safe manner
  • Possess an interest in supporting Half Acre’s diversity, inclusion, and belonging efforts
  • Possess communication skills necessary to manage a team of individuals and work effectively with other production departments
  • Ability to coach and develop team by delegating tasks, providing thoughtful feedback, and inspiring a positive work environment with a culture of inclusion

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in beverage/liquid packaging, experience within a production brewery strongly preferred
  • Experience in a supervisor or manager-level role at a packaging brewery
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • ERP software experience preferred, but training is available
  • OSHA certifications preferred
  • Brewing education preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift 60 lbs.
  • Must be able to maneuver 165 lb. kegs into position
  • Must be able to work in tight spaces where twisting, reaching, and climbing is required
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for long periods of time.
