Job description

This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.

About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants to be a part of the 2023 Parks & Recreation department Outdoor Program summer staff. Outdoor Program leaders will lead summer camp programs focusing on both outdoor adventure and environmental science based activities.
  • What you'll be doing:
    • Plans and leads activities for youth ages 6-17.
    • Acts as leader in group or individual games.
    • Prepares Outdoor Recreation equipment for use.
    • Supervises and/or participates in Outdoor Recreational activities (i.e. hiking, camping, biking, fishing rafting, canoeing, swimming and nature exploration).
    • Plans and leads activities both on and off site, including some overnight camping trips. Administers first aid as needed.
    • Attends regular staff meetings and collaborates with other program leaders.
    • Performs related tasks as required.

    • Energy and ability to engage with youth/teens in summer programming.
    • Strong leadership skills and ability to model mature behavior to youth/teens.
    • Ability to facilitate outdoor activities/games for youth/teens.
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two semesters of college level coursework and/or one year of related experience.
  • Must be willing to take and be able to pass City provided Adult and Child CPR/American Red Cross First Aid certification class if not currently certified. Applicants with current Wilderness First Responder Certification (preferred).
  • Ability to drive program vehicles. Must have a current NC or out-of-state driver's license and be 21 years or older.

Other things to know:
  • Required staff training and site prep held June 3-7, 2024 with varied hours.
  • Hours are generally Monday - Friday between 8:00 am-6 pm, some overnight campouts. This position has limited weekends.
  • Employment dates: Monday, June 3, 2024 through Tuesday, August 13, 2023
  • This position is open until filled with applications being reviewed weekly.

  • General knowledge of the methods and practices of Outdoor Recreation programs including knowledge of the proper use of outdoor equipment and risk management systems.
  • The ability to instruct Outdoor Recreational activities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, program participants and the general public.
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations and maintain program standards.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the following areas:
    • Program planning and implementation for youth in an outdoor setting
    • Prior summer camp or outdoor leadership skills
    • Prefer experience in one or more outdoor activities: paddle sports (kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding), rafting, fishing, hiking and leading outdoor programs for youth)

Physical Ability:
  • Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-75 pounds). Must be able to walk 4-5 miles on sometimes steep, slippery or uneven terrain while carrying a program backpack.
  • Physical ability to sit for prolonged periods of time in vehicles or watercraft such as a kayak.
  • Able to handle long periods of standing and physical activities.
  • Ability to drive program vehicles

Sensory Requirements:
  • Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Ability to drive program vehicles in day and night time conditions including inclement weather
  • Ability to handle loud, unexpected noise from equipment or program participants
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors:
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
  • Some shifts may require prolonged exposure to outdoor working environments.
