Position Summary
The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) is looking for a self-starter to join their award-winning Public Relations Department as a Registrar for the development of BWL’s first corporate historical collection. This opening is for an on-going project-based temp for a minimum of six months.
We’re a company that’s been around for nearly 140 years, looking for someone who is eager to work from the ground up on organizing and developing our historical collection with the possibility of displaying it in the future in a public space. Reporting to the Public Relations & Marketing Manager, the Registrar will work closely with others in the Public Relations Department.
Essential Functions:
- Identifies and implements collections management system, including processing and recording all items in company collection.
- Organizes and maintains collections management system to register and control all incoming and outgoing historical objects and archival materials.
- Maintain accurate inventories and coordinate preventative conservation and organization of storage areas.
- Assesses condition and prepares condition reports for all objects and archival materials kept.
- Develop and follow established collections care standards based on industry standards.
- May assist with the design and installation of future exhibits at possible public display site.
- Will assist with the relocation of objects and archival materials including but not limited to pictures, documents, awards, utility machinery, objects.
- Working closely with all stakeholders to ensure brand consistency.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Other duties as necessitated or assigned.
Job Specifications:
Required:
- Undergraduate degree in collections management, art, art history, American studies, archival sciences, conservation, or related field
- A minimum of one year of relevant experience.
- Familiarity with all collections management forms, ethics, and best practices.
- Familiarity with image rights and reproductions policies.
- Consistently applies the highest professional working standards for the handling of fragile pieces in all media.
- Able to predict the step-by-step requirements of a particular object movement and then work within a team approach to make the move successfully and carefully.
- Detail-oriented with exceptional organization skills and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Exceptional professional and interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the company, including executive leadership.
- Proficiency with technology platforms: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, as well as collection management databases.
- Must have valid Michigan driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree
- Understanding and experience with professional museum standards and applications for museum design.
