POSITION DESCRIPTION
The intern will inventory, map, observe, test, treat trees. Build a plan to move forward to a healthier tree population in the park.
POSITION IMPACT
This will have at the parks disposal the science-based data relevant to our location to make decisions to keep the trees in the park healthy. As a small park with limited staff we do not have the capacity or the subject matter expertise to perform the necessary research, develop strategies for operational changes and initiate compliance. Once complete, the park will be able to execute the recommendations and have a well-documented management decision that balances our natural and cultural resources needs.
DELIVERABLES
Deliver an inventory. Map of inventory. A plan for treatment if needed.
DESIRED INTERN QUALIFICATIONS
Familiarity working with scientific protocols, data collection, and analysis.
Critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Broad Natural Resource Management interests (geology, ecology, botany, etc.).
The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. legal permanent resident ("Green Card holder"). Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.
WORK SETTING
Perry's Victory and IPM is located on an island in Lake Erie. There are two ferry services to the island. One of the ferry services takes passengers, vehicles and supplies. The other ferry service just takes walk-on passengers. The park is a 24 acre site with a visitor center with two administration buildings, three duplex apartment buildings, one house (dorm) and a maintenance building. The park's location is within walking distance to downtown. There is a hardware store, grocery store, local shops for entertainment, a gas station and post office. It is mainly a seasonal community that thrives during the summer months. Weather during the summer months varies between 60s thru 80s with occasional 90 degree days possible. Work setting will vary between field and inside work.
VEHICLE AND DRIVERS LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Applicant must have a valid driver's license to drive a government vehicle.
- A personal vehicle is not required for this position.
HOUSING
Park housing is available and will be provided at no cost to the participant.
We have a dorm style house available with the possibility of sharing a room depending on the size of park staff for the 2024 fiscal year. It is a four bedroom house with two bathrooms, kitchen will all utensils, WIFI included. Intern provides own bed linens and food.
