POSITION DESCRIPTION
This intern position is an interdisciplinary Natural Resource Management internship. The primary focus will be to assist in owl acoustic ARU processing, GIS & GPS inventory and mapping, bee/pollinator habitat modelling, bat acoustic identification, wildlife camera ID, database management, report writing, and Natural Resource monitoring.
POSITION IMPACT
This position addresses interdisciplinary park needs in biology, hydrology, climate change, night skies and geography. The position will assist the park in completing its yearly integrated Natural Resource monitoring field work, processing and reporting.
DELIVERABLES
Deliverables include completion of assigned part of bat & owl acoustic field collection, processing, compiling, and error-correcting; pollinator habitat model; report collaboration and drafts; GPS/GIS project collaboration and map drafts; assigned hydrological / biological / cave fieldwork and data records; updated Standard Operating Procedures; other safety materials, and completion of an independent project selected by intern.
DESIRED INTERN QUALIFICATIONS
- Ideally, this position is suited for a recent college graduate in the sciences with coursework in GIS.
- Other levels of education will be considered.
- Qualifications include the ability to work with a team, lead projects independently, collaborate to solve problems, collect data following protocols, analyze and translate scientific information, work in a rugged field setting / sedentary office setting, use Microsoft software products, and complete GIS / GPS mapping projects. and process bat acoustic files using Sonobat software.
- Possession of a driver's license and safe driving record required.
- Experience with pollinators, habitat modeling, R-analysis, GIS analysis, or using Kaleidescope or Sonobat processing software is a plus!
- The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident ("green-card-holder"). Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.
WORK SETTING
This position will be a combination of sedentary office work using computers and field work in rugged conditions. The SIP participant must be able to work in an office setting and traverse varied terrain including slopes, uneven trails, cross-country areas, wet areas, and snow-covered areas. Oregon Caves is a mountain forest setting located at 4000' elevation. The park housing, offices and visitor center are clustered together just outside the cave entrance. This position will work out of the Resource Cabin, a historic cabin next to the caves and nestled into the hillside. Cave Junction is 20 miles away with 2 grocery stores, dollar store, and numerous restaurants and activities. Grants Pass and Medford are large cities located one to 1-1/2 hours away with all amenities and the closest hospital. Redwood National and State Parks and beautiful beaches are within 2-hours drive from the park. Weather will likely be variable with a mix of sun, rain, and snow. Heavy rain and/or heavy snow will occur occasionally or for extended periods.
VEHICLE AND DRIVERS LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Yes, applicant will need a valid driver's license in order to drive a government vehicle.
- A personal vehicle is RECOMMENDED but not required for this position.
HOUSING
Yes. Park housing is available and will be provided at no cost to the participant.
Park housing will be in a private room in a shared house, or dorm. Park housing supplies full kitchen appliances, furnished living room, dishes, bathroom/shower, laundry, wifi (may be limited), food storage, closet, chest of drawers, and twin bed/mattress. Park housing is located near the cave area in the majestic northwest forest. SIP participant will need to bring clothing, personal items, outdoor gear, bedding, and food.
