Job Summary
DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, the Museum Assistant performs a wide variety of duties related to museum operations, customer service, and educational programs/events that support the Hi-Desert Nature Museum's mission. Museum Assistants are the public face of the museum and vital to behind-the-scenes operations. Applicants should be professional, personable, and possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Candidate will work directly with the public and must be dedicated to providing outstanding customer service to the community, visitors, and staff.
The work schedule for this position is varied and requires applicants that are flexible and committed to working 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays with occasional evening shifts.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
May exercise technical and functional supervision over temporary staff or volunteer workers.

  • Opens and closes the museum while ensuring proper opening and closing procedures are observed.
  • Ensures exhibits, collections on display, and the children's area are stocked, clean, and in good working order.
  • Greets visitors, answers phones, and responds to inquiries while providing a high level of customer service.
  • Assists with research, documentation, and preventive care of the Collections.
  • Assists with educational programs and public presentations.
  • Assists with maintaining living collections and exhibits (animal and plant).
  • Assists with installation and dismantling of the exhibits.
  • Assists with planning and conducting special events.
  • Performs general office tasks, maintaining logs and announcement boards, and filing documents.
  • Assists with social media updates and announcements.
  • May receive and reconcile payments by cash, credit card, or check.
  • Assists with department activities and events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and report preparation.
  • Modern office practices, methods, computer equipment and computer applications.
  • English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Operation of computers and relevant software.
  • Town Administration and Department functions.
  • The Town's roles, responsibilities, and commitment to its citizens.
  • Care and feeding of small animals, including reptiles, mammals, arachnids, and insects.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.

Ability to:
  • Provide quality customer service to museum visitors.
  • Understand, interpret, and successfully communicate both orally and in writing, pertinent department policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Operate a computer and use associated software, Microsoft Suite.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Perform administrative support work.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the public.
  • Compile and maintain records and prepare routine reports.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education equivalent to two years at an accredited college or university with major coursework in natural science, museum studies, social science, history, or related field and two years of experience in one or a combination of the museum service, historical service, education, and customer service.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
Veteran's:
To Establish Eligibility for Veteran's preference for open recruitments, applicants must attach a DD214 or other documentary evidence to this application.
Supplemental Information
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office, museum facility and community services facilities settings and use standard office and/or museum equipment, including a computer, to operate a motor vehicle and to visit various Town and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, operate standard office equipment and to assemble museum displays and exhibits. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk in and around museum and community services activities; and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Environmental Elements
Employees primarily work in an indoor facility environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Work involves potential exposure to exhibit animals, animals known to cause allergies, animal waste, and animal bites. Employees may interact with the public either onsite or at offsite locations in interpreting and presenting museum and community service exhibits, educational presentations, and related departmental activities.
DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All Town employees are, by State and Federal law, Disaster Service Workers. The roles and responsibilities for Disaster Service Workers are authorized by the California Emergency Services Act and are defined in the California Labor Code. In the event of a declaration of emergency, any employee of the Town may be assigned to perform activities which promote the protection of public health and safety or the preservation of lives and property. Such assignments may require service at locations, times, and under conditions that are significantly different from the normal work assignments and may continue into the recovery phase of the emergency. If a "Local Emergency" is declared during the employee's shift, the employee will be expected to remain at work due to the emergency needs of the community. If a "Local Emergency is declared outside of the employee's shift, the employee must make every effort to contact his/her direct supervisor or department head to obtain reporting instructions as a Disaster Service Worker.
