The Municipal Solid Waste Crew Leader is responsible for the operation of a packer truck and the leading of a crew engaged in the collection of recycling, SOLID WASTE and/or yard waste. This position a key member of the Public Works Leaf Collection & Adverse Weather Response teams. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Solid Waste Operations Coordinator.
The ideal candidate is a dependable professional able to utilize strong leadership skills to guide a crew through daily routes and responsibilities. Flexibility is a non-negotiable trait, as the right candidate will be able to work with multiple crews and collection routes to provide efficient and thorough service to our citizens. Typical Tasks
Drives trucks over prescribed routes to collect yard waste and transport it to prescribed disposal areas;
Operates the packer to pack and dump refuse;
Oversees the work of assigned crew while on collection route;
Works with crew throughout the route to balance collection speed and load; observes workers in the operation of packing equipment;
Instructs new employees in proper collection methods to assure efficiency, neatness, and safety;
Perform pre and post trip inspection of truck
Provides input for performance reviews of subordinates;
Answers questions from citizens regarding department procedures;
Participates in the cleaning, care and maintenance of equipment;
Performs other job-related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and rear load and equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE equipment; skill and care in the operation of the equipment; ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace and under various weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to read and understand a map; mechanical aptitude; ability to lead crews; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to use an iPad.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in operation of motorized equipment.
Requires possession of a valid class "B" commercial driver's license with an acceptable driving record.Requires National Incident Management System (NIMS) training (provided)
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
