General Description
The Orange County Solid Waste Management Department openings for two Solid Waste Collector Drivers. The work involves the responsibility for collecting and transporting Solid Waste and/or recyclable materials from residential and commercial properties, which may include operating automated side loader, front-end loaders, rear loaders, and other vehicles that require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a Unit Supervisor with some leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the performance of duties, Supervision or acting as a leadworker may be a responsibility of this class depending on the assignment. Does related work as required.
This distinct classification requires a CDL Class B driver's license.
* This is a safety sensitive position and participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program is required. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse clearance is required.Fitness for Duty Assessment is required. Background check required. Recent MVR required.
Examples of Essential Functions
Following are examples of typical work activities and responsibilities. The incumbent may be responsible for performing other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned. A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned.
Collects and transports recyclables from residential and commercial properties, convenience centers, county government buildings, and county schools.
Operates heavy equipment such as automated or side-load collection vehicles, front-end loaders, rear loaders and other vehicles in the collection and transportation of Solid Waste throughout the County.
Inspects the truck prior to leaving on route to ensure that it is properly cleaned, serviced, and fueled.
Performs routine maintenance on the truck such as greasing the lifts, checking the tire pressure, and checking fluid levels.
Completes equipment repair requests as necessary.
Washes and cleans the truck on a regular basis.
Completes daily route sheets, landfill tickets and other required paperwork.
Adheres to all safety regulations, and uses Personalized Protection Equipment (PPE) as required.
Performs other duties as required.

Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated skill in the operation of sanitation vehicles, refuse trucks and related equipment.
Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices, and the ability to apply these practices to assigned work.
General knowledge of State and County laws, regulations and standards governing heavy-duty equipment operation.
Good knowledge of the geography and road system of the county, and of collection routes.
Good knowledge of locations of county buildings and schools.
Skill in the basic maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.
Skill in defensive driving techniques.
Skill in using various hand and power tools.
Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, resourcefulness, accuracy, thoroughness and the physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and to work independently in the performance of regular duties.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, government regulations and procedures manuals.
Ability to complete routine paperwork evaluation after completing a task.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from High School or General Educational Development (GED) test equivalency AND two (2) years of related experience in the operation of Solid Waste collection or sanitation vehicles.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the State of North Carolina.
All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of the FMCSA Clearinghouse and pre-employment drug testing. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.
This is a safety sensitive position and participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program is required.
A Fitness for Duty Assessment is required.

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of sitting, standing, walking, balancing, stooping, climbing, fingering, talking, bending, kneeling, grasping, hearing, handling, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, and reaching.
Ability to perform heavy work, exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects up to 50 feet.
Must possess sufficient physical strength and agility to perform sustained and heavy manual labor for long periods of time under varying weather conditions.
Must possess the visual acuity to visually inspect parts and materials, use measurement devices, fabricate or assemble parts, perform extensive reading, operate heavy equipment and operate a computer terminal.
Worker is subject to hazards involving electrical devices and machinery with moving parts.
Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions including extreme hot and cold temperatures, atmospheric conditions (wind, rain, ice/snow and humidity) for extended periods of time during the day or night.
Worker is subject to above average noise and vibrations.
Worker is subject to exposure with hazardous materials including chemicals, grease, oil, and Freon.
Worker is subject to exposure to respiratory hazards including fumes, gases, chemicals, smoke, dust or dirt.
