The full salary range is: $40,173-$59,093. The expected hiring range is $40,173-$43,451 depending on qualifications, with an excellent benefits package. Work Schedule:
Wednesday thru Tuesday 6:30am-3:00pm

Brief Description of Work:
We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic individual to serve as a Solid Waste Operator who is passionate about building better lives and a better community. The primary purpose of this position is to provide the pick-up and disposal of garbage and trash from Parks and Recreation facilities in an efficient and timely manner; to deposit collected refuse and debris at the designated disposal facility; and to ensure that collection vehicles are properly equipped and serviced for routes. The person in this position will receive immediate supervision from the Parks & Recreation Construction Supervisor and exercise supervision over seasonal temps.

Other responsibilities and duties will include:
  • Collect trash from cans and scattered debris around parks; inspect playground equipment daily according to the playground inspection checklist.
  • String Trim and spray around playground as necessary.
  • Refill Doggy-Pot bag dispensers as necessary.
  • Inspect collection vehicles to ensure proper mechanical functioning and prepare for daily use; maintain proper fluid levels; ensure that collection vehicle is kept clean; perform post-trip inspection to ensure vehicle will be ready for next day service.
  • Maintain records of all collections and playground inspections performed, and enter data into the EAM work order system on a timely basis.
  • Ensure that safety apparel is worn at all times and that all safety rules and practices are observed in the performance of all duties.
  • Report any evidence of graffiti, vandalism or other crimes to the supervisor immediately.
  • Consult with immediate supervisor for any route changes or hazardous driving conditions; communicate with supervisor any code violations, hazardous conditions, or other information.
  • Supervise seasonal employees.
  • Subject to emergency call back at any moment for storm, ice, or snow events.

Employees of the City of Greensboro are expected to perform all duties listed in their position descriptions, as well as their related duties as assigned, according to the City’s four core values of honesty, integrity, stewardship, and respect. All employees will exercise resource stewardship and report known or expected irregularities to the immediate supervisor to ensure compliance with City policies/procedures. Must be able to able to interact and communicate effectively orally and in wiring with diverse populations. Must be able to keep accurate records and use a computerized system. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 100lbs.

This job is Non-Exempt and is subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED with1-3 years of Solid Waste Collection experience (i.e., refuse, recycling, etc.)
    • “OR" No High School diploma/GED with 5-7 years of Solid Waste Collection experience (i.e., refuse, recycling, etc.)
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License “OR” the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Prior experience with basic landscape tools, (e.g. shovels, rakes, string trimmers, backpack blowers, etc.) or related landscaping field
  • NC Public Operators Pesticide License “OR” the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire


An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Experience working in Parks & Recreation
  • Experience working in Sanitation
  • Experience with Solid Waste collection routes; location of city streets and addresses
  • Experience using rear-loading collection vehicles
  • Experience working with the EAM Work Order System or related access software
  • Experience with the principles, practices, and methods of refuse, recyclables and yard waste collection
  • Experience with the maximum load capacity for collection vehicles; operation, use, and general maintenance of collection vehicles and equipment
