Form of workThe schedule for this position is 7:00 am - 5:00 pm, 4 days a week.
Employees in this class operate various automated SOLID WASTE and modified pick-up trucks in the collection of SOLID WASTE, recycling materials, and yard debris on an assigned route. Employees perform cleaning and minor preventive maintenance to assigned truck. Employees are subject to hazards in SOLID WASTE work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, oils, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, tight quarters, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, chemicals, and narrow passage ways. Employees are subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision of the Solid Waste Superintendent and is reviewed for accuracy, safety, and adherence to established standards.
- Operates a specialized fully automated or semi-automated side loading vehicle to collect curbside carts filled with trash or recycling materials; or yard debris operates controls inside or outside the truck to connect mechanical arm to cart and to dump trash in the vehicle.
- Operates a rear loading SOLID WASTE vehicle to collect residential dumpsters; exits vehicle to operate controls to connect dumpster to empty trash.
- Drives a dual sided loader in congested areas to collect SOLID WASTE; exits the vehicle to collect trash cart and empty in side troth.
- Drives pick-up trucks on assigned residential routes to collect bagged yard debris; hauls bags to Public Services Center and unloads debris.
- Drives vehicle along an assigned residential or commercial route(s); hauls filled truck to the landfill or recycling center.
- Assist coworkers in completing routes and responds to service tickets for missed carts.
- Leaves tickets and notes with residents to explain reasons when pick-up is not possible and informs supervisor of the circumstances.
- Performs daily pre and post trip inspections of truck; cleans and washes vehicle and performs general vehicle maintenance to include checking oils and fluids, greasing equipment and fueling vehicle; reports any unsafe conditions of equipment and other necessary repairs to supervisor.
- Completes daily inspection sheet of activities.
- Delivers collection carts to residents; picks up damaged carts
- Answers questions from citizens regarding department procedures.
- Must be cross trained to help other departments during inclement weather conditions, whatever is needed.
- Assists other Public Service divisions as needed.
- Performs related duties as required

- Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations for equipment operation.
- Ability to perform difficult and complex operational duties in the equipment of assigned responsibility.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to complete daily inspection reports and read maps;
- Ability to interact with the public with courtesy and tact.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the general public.
This position requires enforcing and following all Village of Pinehurst and OSHA safety regulations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from high school and some experience in the operation of heavy equipment related to sanitation or operating heavy trucks in residential areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of valid NC CDL B drivers' license or equivalent is required. Employment Type: Full Time Regular
