Description:
This position resides in the Vertical Lift Composite Materials and Processes Lab and supports the evaluation of parts, materials, processes, technology or equipment through research and testing to ensure safety, reliability and adherence to requirements and specifications.
Hands on experience in composite and adhesive materials required.
This is a hands-on role and requires the candidate to manufacture composite and bonded test articles.
Position Responsibilities:
Fabricating composite parts using the following processes: molding, forming, Client-up, co-curing, co-bonding, infusion, repair, surface preparation
Cutting composite plies by hand in accordance with prescribed shape and orientations
Operating autoclaves, ovens, and heated presses to cure composites
Performing composite Client-up per detailed manufacturing instruction and specifications, consulting with other teammates
Machining composite test panels and parts using drill press, wet saws, water jet, table saw, band saw, router, sanding (by hand or using sanding equipment)
Operating precision measuring tools (e.g., calipers, scales, micrometers) to check work performed
Operating Computerized Numerical Control (CNC equipment as required to complete work
Operating hand/power tools for cutting and trimming
Troubleshooting and resolving laboratory equipment issues and working with facilities and maintenance personnel to complete repairs
Coordinating laboratory activities, maintenance, and repairs
Assisting in the purchase of new test equipment, fixtures, and tools
Applying routine organic coatings for bonding and corrosion protection purposes
Using personal protective equipment when using chemicals (e.g., resins, release agents, paints, sealant, solvents) and machining as required for fabrication
Coaching and training other employees
Working under general direction
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Experience working in a lab and/or production environment
Experience providing services to customers
Experience using Microsoft Office products like Outlook, Power Point, Excel, and Word
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
3+ years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
3+ Mechanical testing of composites (tensile, compression, lap shear, etc)
Experience with flammability testing
Experience interpreting data in a fast-paced environment
Experience with running and using machines
High school graduate or General Education Diploma (GED)
Thermal analysis (TGA, TMA, DSC, Rheometer)
Typical Education/Experience:
Mid-Level (Level 3):
Typically acquired through advanced education (e.g. Associate) and typically 3 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. Bachelor+1 years' related work experience, 5 years' related work experience, etc.).
Senior (Level 4):
Typically acquired through advanced education (e.g. Associate) and typically 6 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. Bachelor+4 years' related work experience, 8 years' related work experience, etc.).
