General Summary of Position
Maintains responsibility for evaluating patients in the Emergency Department who present with psychiatric or related problems. Acts as consultant to staff in Emergency Department. Performs crisis intervention and counseling, support, and referral services to both psychiatric patients and their families.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Performs psychiatric assessments and mental status evaluations on all patients who present in the Emergency Department with psychiatric disorders or complaints.
  • Contacts and consults with the psychiatrist-on-call regarding diagnoses and recommendations for treatment for all psychiatric evaluations.
  • Maintains open and continuous communications with Emergency Department staff and consults with Emergency Department physician regarding final diagnosis and disposition plans.
  • Makes arrangements for hospital admission, transfer to another facility or follow-up for patients with a local agency.
  • Uses age appropriate games, rewards and praise when explaining and performing treatments and procedures.
  • Facilitates both voluntary and involuntary admissions by contacting insurance companies for preauthorization when necessary, giving report to the accepting unit or facility and completing all appropriate paperwork.
  • Maintains logs on computer of all patients who are formally evaluated by Mental Health Professionals in the Emergency Department. Documents in patient medical record.
  • Attends Emergency Psychiatric Services staff meetings and other meetings as requested.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • MSW or MSN required or Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology or related field or Doctoral degree Psychology or related field required

Experience
3-4 years Clinical experience directly related in Mental Health required
