Medical Records Specialist
Position: The Medical Records Specialist is responsible for all clerical tasks within the Medical Records Department including the processing of all Medical Records and statistical analysis and coding as assigned.
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: Two years training and or/ experience in clerical work and typing with emphasis on medical terminology. ICD-10 Coding training.
Knowledge: Knowledge of hospital policy and procedures relating to medical record maintenance. Knowledge of the release of confidential information.
Ability to find selected information in a medical record.
Knowledge of medical record coding.
Job Duties:
- Assembles discharged patient records.
- Types department reports for Medical Records Coordinator.
- Files patient records.
- Participates in activities associated with Medical Records services including in-services and community activities.
- Copies charts for releases of information to be sent out.
- Pulls charts from discharge census to be audited, gathers audits, and maintains log on audited charts.
- Maintains census books and patient index cards.
- Performs chart analysis to ensure quality and completeness.
- Checks charts to verify applicable regulations are maintained.
- Adapts to changing situations or work assignments.
- Demonstrates willingness to rotate to other areas of hospital within the limits of preparation and skill level.
- Conforms to uniform and dress code, personal hygiene and good grooming.
- Wears and properly display name badge.
- Positively responds to guidance or counseling and attempts to benefit by it.
- Adept in identifying potential problems within the department and seeks management guidance
- Demonstrates excellent organizational skills and originator of new ideas and methods.
- Use verbal and non-verbal communication with others, i.e., courtesy, tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures, etc.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Participate in continuing educational programs as prescribed by hospital policy, as well as attendance to hospital and department staff meetings per department policy.
